Hypothetical situation :Let's say I applied before the early action deadline, and in December I receive a deferral.

Will they look at my semester 1 senior grades?
Does it mean that it's unlikely that I'll get accepted?
Does that mean I should send additional materials to better my chances (better test scores, recommendation letters, etc)

It depends on the deferral letter, one requires you to send it in, the other recommends you send it in. But regardless, you should send it in or your chances are next to zero for getting accepted. Getting deferred is by no means a death sentence. You still have a very good shot at getting admitted, depending on your stats. Additional material will definitely help you but you should probably identify what part of your application the admissions has a concern about and try to focus there rather than just simply flooding them with new stuff. When you get deferred, you become RD and yes you can get waitlisted. Generally people with borderline grades who get deferred will get an acceptance letter very quickly with one more semester of good grades.

My daughter was deferred EA last year and quickly accepted (by Dec 23) when her first semester grades were submitted by her guidance office. While Rodney makes a good point, last year’s response time from the admissions office was all over the board. They could not handle the volume at all. Hopefully, they are better staffed for this year’s applicants. Good luck to you.

My son was accepted in December 2010, and it is my understanding that all accepted students are required to submit their first semester grades from their senior year of high school.
