Deferred Already?

Do you consider October 8th early, lindsyoxo?

@lindsyoxo, where did you get your information? I know for a fact that Michigan will mail you a paper letter in December if you get deferred, I still have mine, and that paper rejection letters are no longer given as a way to conserve paper. I am 80% sure that you will not get an e-mail when you are deferred, it’s strange but that’s the way it works. Additionally, just because the 7th semester grade thing hasn’t shown up on WA doesn’t mean you are in a good position. Some people aren’t required to hand in their 7th semester grades even if they are deferred but the system is slightly arbitrary. You can’t read into something like that.

@ArkhAik, I would say both. Obviously some strong OOS applicants who hadn’t applied previously will do so now and make the applicant pool stronger. That’s how the ACT IRQ has gone from 27-31 in Fall 2009 to 29-33 in Fall 2011. But I’m also sure there are some people applying just because it’s simply another supplement. You can’t explain an increase simply from one end, I’m sure the increased OOS applications come from both ends. I think gaining admissions becomes more difficult but the increase in unqualified applicants skews the numbers and makes it seem more difficult than it actually is.

That makes sense lindsy I hope you are right and stanford its not just when you submit it but when you have all your info in

Anthony I was deferred last year and did get an email on December 19th that explicitly said “Thanks for your early action application, but you are being moved to the regular applicant pool.” It may have changed from 2009 to 2010, I’m class of 2015.

@KyleTwentyEleven, OK, I wasn’t aware of that, the friend that I had that were deferred last year received a letter actually informing him, but he could have been an exception. I think he also mentioned an e-mail but I wasn’t really paying attention since I was trying to make him feel better.

I got an email back from Michigan about my potential deferral and asking if there was any follow up I needed to do. I got a response that said: “You will receive your Early Action decision the week of December 23rd when they are released to all EA applicants.”

Not definitive, but I’m not surprised. I’ll just have to be patient! :)

yea Id be prepared to be deferred but you never know does any1 know why they don’t release decisions periodically anymore instead of releasing them all that week?

monterey, what are your stats?

Michigan is a reach for me. I posted them on page two of this thread.

Weird update… the “7th semester grades” line has disappeared.

I think apps go through a couple people so perhaps someone changed it and the next person changed it back…who knows. Try to relax. You’ll hear something in a month or so…

Your stats look fine to me. How is it a reach? The only thing I see is that you didn’t take very many honors classes.

So, I just checked Wolverine Access and it DOES NOT say “7th semester grades”, now should I take it as a sign that I have been accepted or rejected? UofM had my COMPLETED application including test scores, transcripts, secondary school report, and letters of recommendation by October 26, 2011.

I wouldn’t we have only heard of 1 person so far who got this and he now says it went away so I would not get your hopes up just yet

no standford. only a couple people have had this on their WA access. read the whole thread before asking questions.

I’m a girl actually
@chronome I agree, I should have challenged myself more. That said, when moved junior year I couldn’t register for very many APs/Honors because they were full. I’m worried about my stats because SO many people apply from my school. I believe around 80 people are applying from a class of about 425.

Monterey, lots of people have been admitted in previous years after sending in their senior grades, and if you don’t have many APs to measure rigor, it’s normal for them to want to confirm your capability for performance. Focus on maintaining your grades, not on wolverine  and don’t worry that other people haven’t seen that on their files – they may just not even have been “read” yet by the adcom. I know it’s hard not to cipher!

If you do end up being deferred, be sure to get your grades in promptly, and fortify your interest in UM with a short letter, a possible explanation of why so few APs, and or possibly another super strong recommendation. Best wishes!

Has anyone else been deferred?

Wait if I haven’t gotten the “you qualify for early action” email should I be worried? I sent in my application on November 1st, so it was right on the deadline. But it was nov 1st not 2nd. I never got any email saying im being reviewed under early action, just an email saying they received my application and how to set up a wolverine account.

I see everyone is anxious here. My daughter applied to 2 EAs and one ED. She got her first quarter grades a week ago and they were her best ever. None of those schools required first quarter or first semester grades, but we asked her GC to submit it as “additional information.”

My nephew moved to a new high school sophomore year. He couldn’t take many APs due to tracking. His GC put it in his recommendation letter. He ended up taking many APs senior year, ended up getting all As first quarter. He sent it in to his ED school to show them that he was capable of the work. He was accepted to Cornell with very few APs, except senior year.

I would encourage you to send in additional info to Michigan even if if it’s not required, especially of you moved when you were in high school.
