Deferred, and admitted: here's how!

Last year my daughter was deferred, and later admitted RD round. None of us believed it, as "A for Admissions" author was frequently on CC last year and said the chances were slim, yet possible. Anyway, my D did the following: raised her SAT scores by 90 points, asked for a third teacher recommendation, call her regional reps and had GC call as well, sent a very personal letter confirming that Dartmouth was still her number one choice and assured them she would attend if admitted, listed new awards and sent a picture of herself along with the letter as well. Let me know if I can be of any more help, but please don't give up hope, but at the same time, get psyched about the other schools you might be attending. Best of luck to you all....

What were your daughters stats, if you dont mind saying?

I just got rejected as well... :(

-Shawn

Shawn... Were you deferred or rejected? Either way, part of the process is to now move forward and don't be discouraged. My D's stats when she applied ED: low 1400's on SAT's. RD: low 1500's. All scores, including SAT II's were between 700-800 most above 750. Do continue to show interest in the school if you were deferred and make sure you write a really great letter to the Admissions people close to the RD decision making time. Hang in there. I promise things will work out for you and others in your situation.

I was deffered, it feels like rejected, but deffered. Her final stats are similar to mine for the most part.
Now, from here i have a few things in mind to do, however when roughly should a letter to the admisions people be sent? Also would it be benificial to have another interview?

thanks
-shawn

Did you have an on campus interview as well as off? The alumni interview seems to help very little (and the on campus even less!) but is worthwhile, just the same. I think my daughter sent her letter to the head of admissions (and sent copies to her regional reps) around mid March. She had her third teacher recommendation sent immediatly upon deferral. What other schools do you like? My D particularly liked a few, including Midd, Tufts, and a few outside of the eastcoast. She put Dartmouth out of her mind, other than doing the follow-up, and concentrated on other schools she liked.

I got deferred too. I'm just a little stunned right now. I never had an interview so I'll check into that. Thanks for the advice.

what would a deferred student calling thier regional rep say?

yeah, i had the same question...but im applying RD...should i still send a picture, a letter expressing my interest in dartmouth, and i havent had my interview yet, but is there anything i should know?

My D ended up getting a "phone appointment" with one of her two regional reps. This took place in January if I remember correctly. D asked rep why her application had been deferred and if she had any suggestions as to how to make her application stronger. Rep didn't have much advice other than to continue to work hard. Rep liked hearing that SAT's were raised from initial ED application. I actually think my D's letter went out in early Feb to Fustenberg with copies to regional reps, sorry for earlier error in saying March. For kids applying RD, only send a letter saying Dartmouth is #1 if it is true, and you must explain why you didn't apply ED (financial reasons, just had another campus visit, etc...). I told D to send picture with application because I read on CC that girls were considered "dogs" on campus, but the D isn't, maybe that would increase her chances?? Meanwhile there are many, many attractive girls and handsome guy 08'ers, so the picture only ended up putting a personal touch to her application! It is imperitive that you send a very strong letter to Adcom's after deferrel, that Dartmouth is still your #1 school. Meanwhile, once you get over the initial blow of being deferred, be proud, it is still a real accomplishment.

Thanks oldhag. You've made me feel better. You're right, even a deferral from an outstanding school like Dartmouth is an accomplishment. I will remember that and write that letter soon.

wow... congrats for your D.

I'm going to remember this if I get Deferred....

oldhag- thanks for your advice. i've actually been deferred ED from Brown, but your suggestions seem to be universal

I was wondering though, how can I find out who my regional rep is? if I call the admission office, will they just tell me? is it located on the website? thanks

I was able to find Dartmouth's list of regional reps on their website, after alot of searching and the help of another CC parent! I am sure you can find it on Brown's website, if not, call the Admissions office and they will tell you. Where else are you applying?

Kinda late in the game to retake the SATs...seeing as they want test scores by January. It was hell getting up to 1500 anyway.

Can you post the link for the regional reps? Thank you!

journogirl05- the link is:
<a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Einterviews/admissions_info/reg_contact.html%5B/url%5D">www.dartmouth.edu/~interviews/admissions_info/reg_contact.html</a>
Glad to see you back on the Dartmouth boards. Sounds as though you will be able to write a stellar letter to the Admissions Office, letting them know about the many awards you have received since your ED application. Best of luck to you. Sounds like you will have many acceptance letters coming your way in April!

hi, i was wondering how to get an interview with a dartmouth alumn...im RD, but i think i have to request the interview by december or something, so if anyone knows how to schedule it, could you please let me know?

p.s. i dont know about anyoen else, but the link doesn;t work for me...is my comp being stupid?

Yikes, you are right, the link doesn't work! Try the following, I'm so sorry.
<a href="http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Einerviewers/admissions_info/reg_contact.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.dartmouth.edu/~inerviewers/admissions_info/reg_contact.html</a></p>

For some reason, I am typing the correct link, but it is posting differently.

don't worry about it...are you entering it as a hyperlink, or just typing in the web address so we can copy and paste? it might work the latter way

Best I can suggest is to go to Dartmouth homepage, put "Enrollment Volunteers
" in the search box, then click on their website. On the right side of this page, hit Admissions Info, and then hit "Regional Officers" on the following page. Hope this works.
