So I got deferred from Cornell CALS just kinda confused on what im supposed to do now...I've read some posts and people are talking about emailing admission counselors/giving updates?
I really dont know what exactly that means/specifics, if anyone could help me out I'd be really grateful. Im the first one in my family to apply to college so I really dont know how a lot of this stuff works and not a lot of people from my school know whats going on with college stuff.

Thanks!

I’d suggest the following:
If grades are excellent for this fall, ask counselor to send an updated report to Cornell when grades are in.
Follow-up with another “essay” type letter that expresses why Cornell is THE school for you.
Apply a few other places - you may not get in after all, but sometimes “second choice” ends up being the perfect choice

Definitely apply to some more schools, but it is very helpful to send in another essay like comom2013 suggested. Make sure it’s heartfelt and further describes what you plan to do at cornell and why the school is a perfect fit.

Absolutely send your Fall grades. No more essays, you already did that.

There is a real lottery with college admissions. They are not chosing between qualified and unqualified. They are chosing between the lacrosse playing engineer and the pole vaulter history major…and the lacrosse team was just suspended and the engineering school is overcrowded.

Apply to five or six schools you are excited about. America has hundreds of good colleges so finding six that match your interests and abilities should be easy.

great advice thanks everyone!
does Cornell defer a lot of people? and what type of people do they defer? the “borderline” kids?

seeing the results threads the people who were deferred have higher stats than me as well as people who were rejected. Cornell has been my dream but it’s a huge reach, I was stunned to get a deferral, perhaps even grateful, because I was expecting a rejection but now I’m just a little hazy in general.

cheers mate, I got deferred as well. According to the statistics my SAT/ACT and gpa are at the 75th percentile, but i guess a nonathletic unlinked student like me needs to be at the 100th percentile to get in lol

well regardless you should be really proud of your scores and grades then! I’m impressed.
for me I’m on the lower end of the middle 50% just have a unique story which is probably why they didn’t let go of me quite yet haha
