Thank you for the helpful advice!
At many schools a deferral does not bode well for an acceptance in the RD round, but BC has always been an exception as they have ultimately accepted a good amount of deferred students. This year of course may be different with the change from EA to ED, so it’s hard to predict, but you do present as a solid applicant. Good luck.
Thank you.
Talk to your GC. Your school should have abundance experience with BC and likely a direct line with the admissions office there.
I am surprised you were not accepted. Your stats and situation would have given you a 90%+ chance of acceptance from my kids’ NY Catholic prep school. You need to discuss your application with your GC ASAP. Look at your school’s Naviance charts.
Don’t feel too bad though even with @cptofthehouse numbers. Even in that case it means 10 out of 100 with your exact stats get deferred even from that school with such a great record. And some schools have long standing relationships and GCs that have proven track records of success in their recommendations.
Lastly I wouldn’t use past Naviance numbers as a guide this year. It’s going to be different.
We can see from the threads that you were not the only student with your profile deferred this year.
I have no special insight. The LOC and further demonstration of interest. Make sure your grades are great for any updates required or that would be helpful.
They say to send out a brief email every six weeks if you have any short and meaningful update.
The info about the last three years WL is also tough to use. Last year the rumors where very very few got off. The year before less than 10 and 60 or so the year before. My guess is maybe a few more this year, but only a hunch.
I would defer to @bbfan1927. He successfully did get off the WL a few years ago and kept at it into July, I recall. No one better than him to help out.
For me it’s only a guess based on observations.
A catholic school in NY? A straight A student. Yeah, I’d be in that GC’s office.
And ask if you should get another teacher’s REC. Ask the GC to find out how to enhance that app. I’d be all over this.
@cptofthehouse I agree with this 100 percent. Maybe even the parish to make a discreet inquiry? What does anyone think about that?
I am 100% going to talk to my guidance counselor about the situation. Like I said previously, I want to walk a fine line to avoid coming off as “desperate” or “like a pest.” From my school, based on previous data, around 7 kids get into BC each year. During the ED round, only 1 got in, one other deferred, the rest denied.
It’s just different this year. And people are adjusting. I think they were very clear this year about Ed. If you would be a likely Wl or rejection in rd you will be politely denied Ed.
I think your deferral speaks to your strength in the next round. Not weakness.
They simply will not have to accept as many in rd and Wl as many with half the class set in Ed 1 and 2. The yield being more predictable will lower admit rates imho.
Keep up the good work and follow some of the suggestions.
Thank you, privatebanker. Do you think it is a smart idea to send an updated, well thought-out resume with my letter of intent? Sorry for all the questions, just want to avoid mistakes.
I don’t think the resume helps.
What I’ve gleaned ,observationally, is very short and respectful updates on regular intervals spread out evenly over the waiting period. Perhaps every six weeks or so. One now. One in early Feb. one in early March.
As @cptofthehouse mentions there are professionals at your school who can connect at a different level and speak for your qualities directly.
Thank you for the helpful guidance.
IMO if you were from an ED round you should move ahead with other applications assuming you will not get into BC. If you do get into BC down the road (which can happen), treat it as a lovely surprise.
I would write a letter of continued interest to your admissions officer reaffirming that BC is your top choice and if you have a meaningful update down the road you can send a second very brief email.
Good advice
Also worth noting that last year BC made a big push for diversity in the EA round. That left a lot of high stat kids who in other years would have sailed through the EA round with a deferral. That probably is at play to some extent this year as well.
I didn’t know that but it makes sense. I think that’s a good thing.
Thankful for everyone responding with helpful advice. Thank you all!
A 4.0 W and UW? NHS all four years? Maybe easy coast schools are different but those seem like red flags
Does anyone know how the RD applications are looking for BC? Meaning, are they getting as many as they expected? I know the deadline isn’t until 1/1, but I think that is the biggest question mark in all of this…those of you that were deferred may do well in the RD round if they don’t get the applications they anticipated. But on the other hand, if they get a ton of RD applications (which they may from kids that were deferred or denied from their ED 1 Schools), then obviously the competition is going to be steep.
There are so many unknowns this year, especially for schools that are just adding ED for the first time, let alone 2 rounds of it. I wonder though with so many schools now offering ED, how this might impact the RD rounds, if at all.
I also sincerely hope that as kids get into their ED2 schools that they withdraw their application immediately. It’s completely unethical not to.
I guess we will know sometime after April 1st!
Good luck @HSSenior49. I hope your passion for the school comes through for you. If it does, I think you stand a good chance. You sound like a great candidate.
Hi. @collegemomjam
I personally don’t have any info yet.
The word on the street, (so take it with a grain of salt). BC received around 1800 Ed apps. More than anticipated. They’ll probably see a bump ed2. Rd they are looking at 21k or so. If it all comes together it would be in the 24 to 25 range. Down from the 36k last year.
The thing is about half the class will be selected Ed. So the rd round will be crowded.
My guess is about 15 to 18 percent acceptance rate with a yield guess and spots remaining.
Translating to 4500 acceptances for the remaining 1100 spots.
This bringing the accepted pool to be around 5500 acceptances vs 8500 approx last year on 25k applications for an overall 22% acceptance rate.
Which compares to 18 and 14. at ND and Gtown approx. which makes sense as the “Catholic elites” tend to get less “just because” applications which inflates their acceptance rates vs their peers. As a result of the religious affiliation imho.
This is my guess obviously.
The other thing in ed2 and rd will be a premium on selecting a diverse class geographically, SES and culturally. First gen, pell grant level, international and AHANA cultural diversity will receive a boost, all things being equal.
I would venture to guess that Ed 1 was predominantly higher income, northeast and Caucasian Catholic.
All guesses here but thoughtfully considered.
We will see.
