Deferred applicant thread

Making this thread to have deferred applicants vent, answer questions, and speak about their plans (as well as check out chances with other applicants after you see their stats). We could all use some hope at this point!

Original Stats: 3.63 GPA, 29 ACT
1st semester grades: 3.77 GPA

Got another recommendation, wrote a letter detailing my improvements this year, my activities, and how I will attend if accepted. Also included a laundry list of ECs.

Submitted this stuff about 2 weeks ago, grades were mailed around that time. Applied to Kinesiology - Sport Management.

I wasn't really deferred; rather, I received a letter requesting my semester grades, that never mentioned deferral.

Original Stats: 3.0 UMich GPA, 2110 SAT
1st Semester: 3.8 UMich GPA, 4 AP's

My headmaster wrote a letter on my behalf. I also wrote a letter stating that I would attend if accepted.

I submitted this stuff in the middle of January.

WOuld that letter work? I was going to do the same thing, but my guidence counselor told me not to because she wasn't convinced that if I was offered an appointment to the naval academy that I would decline it.

Original Stats: OOS, 3.3ish GPA (with really tough courseload), 1410/1600 SAT
1st semester: 3.6UMich GPA (B in AP Calc BC and AP Physics)

Grades will be mailed by Wednesday/Thursday or so.

It helps me because Michigan is my first choice. In rolling admissions, this doesn't benefit you much because there is no ED.

Yeah, I know it oculd only help, but would they even consider/look at it? I sent my letter in hopes that it would get there perfectly timed right about the same time as my grades so they'd have to look at it, but my grades were sent a week later, so who knows what they did with my letter. But would they actually consider what you say?

I think they would. They view applications holistically, they look at every part of it.

As I said, I also sent in a letter a few weeks ago. Didn't say the same things yours did, but I didn't know thye would read. I thought I might as well try. I had other people send in additional recommendations in the fall, but when I asked UM if they took extra recommendations, they said they'll take them, but since it's not an official part of the application, it's up whoever reads the application to decide if they want to consider anything extra in their decision. That's why I wasn't sure if they would read my letter.

Did anyone call admissions to ask why they were deferred?

I'm so anxious to find out if I got in or not. I wish I was a grade ahead so that it wouldn't have been this hard to get in my year :( I was deferred but I sent in 2 extra teacher recommendations and a letter...even if they don't read them I figure it will show that I have a really strong interest in going to UMich...I had a 3.75/3.8ish GPA, 1340/2030 SATs, decent essays I guess and average ECs. Blahh. Any other deferrees get accepted?

I got deferred today to the engineering program..... :( ....but i actually say this as a good thing because i thought i was going to get rejected...hahah. I have a bad gpa... 3.3 and am from OOS so i think there was no way in hell. The only thing I have going is some major EC's, really good, unique essays, and i believe decent recs. 1760 on SAT. I also attend i believe one of the top 3 high schools in CA, and #91 in the nation. Does this matter??? I also took an extremely hard course load. I think im going to get one more letter of rec from the math department chair and right a letter of how bad i want to go.

I was thinking of calling... but by the time I get home, they're closed, and there's no way I'm calling during school. I dunno, maybe I will.

What I want to know is the stats of people who've been deferred and recieved a final decision - and what the final decision was...

Original Stats: 3.88 GPA, 30 ACT
1st Semester stats: 3.6 GPA, dropped 2nd semester calc, so it went from being a full credit on my report card to being a half credit... so things don't look so good for me so far... =/ EMU, here I come.

EMU really isn't a bad school, especially for teaching. I'm surprised the rep it gets. It's better than Michigan for teaching.

Anyways, I couldn't believe you were deferred. I thought you were definitely in.

Yeah, it is pretty well known for teaching. I think EMU's selection of majors is better than U of M's, but U of M is ... U of M... which makes me kinda go back and forth between which one I want to go to. I'm indecisive.

The suspense kills me though.

Now if only you were my admissions counselor... :D

DS was deferred in January, called today to see if they had gotten his mid year grades, they said they have his grades. They said he would get a decision in early April.

A2Wolves, what do you mean when you say that EMU is better than Michigan for Teaching? Do you mean it has a better school of Education? If that's the case, I must disagree. Michigan's school of Education is one of the top 10 in the nation...EMU isn't even ranked in the top 50.

I got deffered few days ago
but they had my mid year report before they made the decision
what's this?

Alexandre, EMU had its beginnings as a normal school, so it's historically known for Education. U-M does have a top school, but its undergrad programs aren't necessarily its strongest point. It's the grad programs that really enhance its rep.

That said, however, the new dean is totally on the ball, and a real go-getter. She believes there is no reason a school like Michigan isn't at the forefront of teacher education initiatives, and she's going to achieve that. They've already begin a new initiative to revise teacher training (this was her baby before she became dean, in fact) and I think it's going to be wonderful. I am not sure what else she has up her sleeve but she's brilliant, persuasive, and has the support of alumni and the administration at Michigan. School of Ed is a pretty exciting place to be these days.

Of course, I am not convinced that anyone in this wanted to know all this....the "better for teaching" comment may have mean that A2Wolves thinks the pedagogy at EMU is superior. If nothing else, you got a free update on the School of Ed! :)

UG Education Michigan isn't good, EMU has a great teaching school.
