Deferred Applicants in the Regular Round

Hey guys, so I was wondering what exactly happens to deferred students. Are their applications given an entirely new and fresh review in the regular round, or do colleges just keep the notes they made on the student from the first review and use them to decide if they are good enough the second time around? Also, if I sent in some additional material in mid January, do you think that was early enough to be reviewed and that my application had not already been looked at again?

Yes, you sent your additional info in time. My understanding is that deferred applications start from scratch in the RD round. Do they use the previous reader’s notes? Great question. They will know you are deferred, but I suspect the application would be read by someone else this time around. I know they do leave markings, etc…on the app, so it’s possible a new reader will see those. But they are supposed to look at it as though it’s the first time they have seen it.

However, depending on the college you have applied to, it’s unlikely you will get in. My understanding is that deferred applicants have just as slim a chance as those who get off the waitlist. So if it’s Stanford, you are talking a minute chance of admission. Not trying to dash your hopes, but it’s best to assume it won’t happen.

Thanks for getting back to me, appreciate it.

Also, does anyone know if colleges wait until the mid year report comes in before evaluating an applicant? My counselor has been sick and still hasn’t submitted mine.
