Deferred Applicants

Do deferred applicants from early action have a better chance to get accepted than people who just apply regular decision?

Sometimes maybe, and sometimes no. I know that’s a frustratingly vague answer, but it depends a lot on the college or university in question.

And even then, an answer that was accurate for the whole population probably isn’t really what you care about, right? What your really care about is what’s going to happen to your application. So if only 15% of deferred applicants are accepted, but you’re one of them, you’ll be happy. Or of 85% of deferred applicants are accepted, but you’re not one of them, you’ll be disappointed. Am I right?

I know this waiting is absolutely crazy-making, but I really don’t think there’s any kind of omen hidden in a deferral. Sorry.

Okay, thanks for the response. I just got deferred from my top choice and had borderline stats. That being said, I was just wondering if deferred applicants usually have a little edge in regular decision admissions.

Lets just put it this way… The school can see your senior grAdes now(which will help you if you did well) and by applying early action, you show strong interest.

Those deferred have a second shot, where you can update your application with the latest accomplishments and senior grades.

Good luck!

IMHO - No, you do not have a better shot than the regular applicants.

Think seriously about how much you wish to attend that school – Are you willing to take a gap semester or gap year? Do you need financial aid? Have you earned any recent awards?

Stay in contact with your admissions rep. Let the rep know answers to the above.

My son was deferred from a top choice. They informed him only 25% of deferred are usually accepted. He was also told those willing to gap a semester or a year have a better shot.

Longhaul - do you know if the school’s overall acceptance rate is around 25%?

DRey: Fixating on a “25%” is irrelevant as diff schools have diff policies. There is no hard and fast rule about deferred students. You’re still in the running – and really, that’s all can be said. Trying to squeeze out any hint or clue from your package; trying to see any blemish in order to explain it away; trying to examine and re-examine every iota – is fruitless and creates in peoples’ minds the big potential for undue disappointment. The fact is what’s done is done. Come April 1st, you’ll likely have some great options.

Here is a wise post:
