Deferred Applicants?

Does anyone know how many deferred apps during regular decision are usually accepted in the next round of admissions?

Thanks

or waitlisted, whatever its called

80% of people who apply early get in eventually.including people who got deferred

ilyssa - where did you get this statistic?

from the georgia tech admissions blog

That seems high! Son got deferred too. Did you get the email that you have to send in add’l info by Feb 5th?

Students that apply early are disproportionately higher quality.

Looks like there are several questions about today’s decision release for Early Notification applicants. Let’s see if I can address all your concerns.

First, we did have some issues last year during our regular decision release when about 6,000 students were checking their decision at 5pm. That was the first time we released decisions online, so we think we’ve learned some lessons. We’ve been working with our technology support staff to make sure the system is prepared for the volume that we expect at 5pm. However, we can’t completely predict what will happen when 3900 anxious students hit the system at the same time. If there are issues, rest assured that your decision will be there when you get through.

Second, everyone who applied by October 1 who file is complete will receive an admission decision today. This decision could be an admit, defer or deny. We have denied less than 5% of students who applied in this round, giving students the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.

Finally, students who are deferred will receive a decision with our Regular Decision round on March 15th. This allows us to view deferred students within the context of the full applicant pool, obtain first semester senior year grades and add any additional test scores.

The most important thing for deferred students to remember is that a defer is not a deny! All deferred students will be considered again, and last year we ultimately admitted 80% of students who applied in our early rounds, including those admitted early and those who were admitted after being deferred to Regular Decision.

just in case you were wondering were I got that

We are visiting GTech on Mar 22, by then the decision will be out! Oh my - it will be awkward visiting with son if he got rejected…but we really have no other window to visit.

He is very very eager to finally be able to see what Tech is all about, even after reading all the scary blogs and posts he is still not afraid to go there!

I think the real “scare” of GT (other than from what I hear about the “terrible dorms”) is the rigor and amount of work you will get. However, I feel like my HS has well prepared me for what I (hopefully!) will face in college at GT. So if he feels like he can handle the course load, then by all means, it’s a great school and I think people who graduate from there are proud of their degree.

^Yes, he has been through the drill in HS. Every year he gets at least 2 teachers who have “that” reputation and he has never backed off from a course (AP usually) because of that.

As a parent, I feel a bit anxious, thats all. But I know that in the end it will be worth it.

lol. Dorms are, by definition, terrible. Some of the LACs have really nice dorms, but at any college with more than 5,000 students, they’re pretty terrible. Tech is no more terrible than any other school I’ve visited: small and cramped with community bathrooms. But, that’s part of the college experience and living so close to so many people forces you to make friends. At least the upperclassmen suites (North Ave Apartments) are incredibly nice.

That is not my opinion on the GT dorms, simply what I’ve heard, and I’ve heard they are actually worse than the rest of schools, but I can understand where you are coming from when you say all dorms at schools w/ more than 5000 people suck. I’m still not even sure whether or not I’m going to get in, I am really pushing these next 2 qtr’s to get a B+ avg in one of my classes now (A-/B-/B+ exam) to an A- which would put me around a 3.57 recalculated and give me a much better chance. GT is my motivation for that, hopefully I can pull it off. Going to be very, very difficult though esp in a class that I struggle in (A- was lucky IMO).

They’re not. There are some schools that are exceptions to the rule (particularly formerly commuter schools that have recently constructed housing) but in general, Tech dorms are on par with freshman dorms at other schools of similar size.

One of the nice things about Tech vs. other schools (e.g. UGA) is that the dorms are small 3 and 4 level buildings, whereas other schools construct 20-floor super-complexes. The smaller buildings lead to a greater sense of community.

G.P - if we have about half a day and lets say he gets accepted, would that be enough? He has applied to Engineering for CE, but there is college of computing as well…how much does the first year differ at both? Do the students get slotted from the beginning into one of them?

Should he look at both? He is into software more as of now but wants to learn about hardware as well.

If he gets rejected then we will just go for a general walk through to get a feel of the environment, who knows, he might just come back!!
