My daughter just found out she got deferred by Northeastern and is being put into the regular admissions pool. She applied early action.
Do many people get accepted after being deferred or is it really a polite rejection letter?

I sadly got deferred today, also. Northeastern was like my top school. I’m hoping I have a good second chance. I’ve been reading mixed things online. It’s all a big guessing game.

I do not think that it is just a polite rejection. I would not abandon hope.
Northeastern has been experiencing a big jump in the number and caliber of applicants in the past few years. A few years ago, they ended up with many more freshmen than they anticipated because their “yield” on acceptances was higher than previous years. I would suspect, therefore, that they might be more cautious with EA acceptances and would be more likely to defer people to RD. They do not know exactly what that overall applicant pool will look like. This is speculation on my part, but if they really thought there was no chance they wanted your daughter, they would have rejected her.

Hmm… Looks they did all deferrals, no rejections. My guess still holds on being cautious about some EA acceptances, though.

On their deferral FAQ page, they stated that they admitted more than 3000 deferred students into the school or the NU.in program. I’m crossing my fingers that they will reconsider me. I’m going to talk to my counselor about submitting an additional personal statement, as it is allowed if you were deferred. Also, if you are applying to the school of arts, media, and design, you can still submit a portfolio, which I may do since I was applying for journalism. If anyone needs to talk, I’m here. :)

Yes, it looks like everyone was deferred. I haven’t read of anyone receiving a ‘rejection’ letter.
My daughter has taken an SAT II (Literature) since applying so if that goes well she’ll send that in and I think sending an additional personal statement is a good idea.
Bornpuremichigan where did you see about sending an extra personal statement?

@nanotechnology hah, I wish. At this point I’m pretty sure I’m the only person who got a rejection letter on here.

@kledipow when you log onto the portal to see your admission decision, there should be a link that takes you to an FAQ page.

Actually, a lot of people were rejected. In the FAQ they sent with our deferred email said that last year they ended up accepting 3000 who were deferred. This year more than 20,200 applied so a lot got deferred, but right when they started notifying people a lot were saying they got rejected.

Some RD applicants have started hearing back from admissions, but nothing from deferred EA yet

Has anyone who was deferred EA heard back yet? I sent in improved test scores and an updated transcript so I’m hopeful.

^Everyone for RD will hear the same day. NEU does not release deferred on a different day. It will be somewhat soon I’m guessing.

@novafan1225 they were probably asking because on another thread someone who was deferred claimed to be admitted with the top students in Feb.

^^If it was “eve” whatever her post was deleted as a ■■■■■. She was claiming to be admitted everywhere with mediocre stats.

Might have been. I was talking to my mom last night and she said back when I was deferred my counselor said that they didn’t outright deny me because I had a lot of demonstrated interest and northeastern wanted to defer me because they knew I wanted to go to Northeastern really badly

@Oregongirl14 your school guidance counselor or your Northeastern admissions counselor said that?

my school guidance counselor. My mom was under the impression that she had called to ask them though.

NEU doesn’t take demonstrated interest into account, so there was a misunderstanding somewhere. Your counselor probably said that to help you calm down. They deferred a loooooot of people though, I’m guessing because stats were much higher than normal and they didn’t want to fill the class with average test scores if they could fill a whole class with great test score kids when they saw the RD pool.

(Is it right that NEU focuses a lot on test scores? Probably not, but with 40,000 applicants…it’s fair. Plus they are desperate to move up in the rankings, and test scores play a lot into that),

I’m almost sure they do. Sucks for me though I have a lame SAT score but great everything else.

@novafan1225 Yes they do take demonstrated interest into account. It’s not going to guarantee you admission or anything but if they’re torn between you and another applicant they’re going to chose the one who showed more interest.
