Deferred at Penn. Waitlisted here. Should i loose all hope!?!?!?!

Ughh I feel like waiting is all i've been doing lately, and this decision has kind of just been another kick in the butt.

What do you think? I thought I had a pretty decent chance in spite of my ACT score, but then again in past years, only a couple people have been accepted from my school so idk whats the deal....

Rank: 5/ 550 people
GPA: 4.7 (out of 4 due to weighting...unweighted is 3.94)

DECA state winner

I have several other ECs but I feel that these are my main ones and the ones that I am most proud to be involved in! However, as you can see my goal was to essentially divide my interests in three areas: writing/publishing, Politics/History, Indian Culture. Then of course, this is all accompanied by the usual honor societies and community service.

could you talk about your essays? I think they are important! the commonapp long essay and a short one on your activities…

btw. Your ECs are really amazing. I can never achieve the same! I think you are even qualified to being admitted to Harvard! perhaps Upenn and WUSTL thought you are overqualified.

Keep your chin up. You haven’t been rejected anywhere. Continue to fight hard; be determined; prove to these schools that you deserve a spot in their class.

Same here (cept I have a 34 ACT)…
GPA - 3.97/4.7

w/e though. GL when the important ones come out later.

Wustl is known for waitlisting well qualified students who go on to get accepted at Ivies. That way they boost matriculation rate…so… No you should not give up hope!!

I have a 2400, and I’m from Mississippi. Your claim isn’t completely true.

^do you have good stats besides the 2400? like ecs and volunteer work/gpa and rank?

Congrats IRJunki! But I didn’t say that all super qualified students gt waitlisted. Instead, I meant that many waitlisted students are very well qualified. There’s a difference lol

I am pretty confident in my essays were well written…I had them edited by my newspaper advisor who is a stellar writer so at least I think they were quite unique but who knows now

I think if you look on the accepted line, the students accepted have pretty good stats. It’s just that other students with equally good stats were weight-listed. I heard there were 22,000 applicants so, of course, many great students will not get an admission until the dust settles.

Hardworker, keep your chin up.

I was outright rejected from Penn, waitlisted from WashU.
I have 2300+ sats and ~800 x3 SAT IIs. Good ECs, service, etc etc etc.
I received a likely from Cornell, so there’s hope for you yet. WashU is notorious for waitlisting the overqualified, so for what its worth, take it as a compliment that you were waitlisted since maybe WashU thinks your going to get into a better school and won’t want to attend their school.

Yes, you should lose all hope. You will be rejected from everywhere you applied and your soul will die a gradual stagnant death. There is no hope. Life will not go on. The universe will be swallowed by the black hole left in the space where your soul once was. We are all going to die.

WashU is notorious for waitlisting the overqualified?

Really?

So what does that mean? That they take interest into way more account than scores and ECs and essays? I’ve heard (actually very often) about WashU waitlisting people they thought would much rather go to HYP… but is there any truth to that?

I’m really worried about this. I feel like this means Brown, Penn, and Dartmouth won’t want me either!

omg crazyday you are really getting crazy…dont worry things are not that bad.

@ocgirl: I don’t think WUSTL will be a bad choice! I think I shall be very likely to be in St.Louis this autumn! though I am waiting for top school results too.

@dawncoming: Sorry if I didn’t make it clear - but I was waitlisted! Not accepted!

I was just making the point that if I couldn’t get into WashU, how can I get into my dream schools? But if there is some truth to the idea that WashU likes to waitlist the “overqualified”, that would give me hope. But its all speculation in the end I guess!

Congrats on your acceptance though! Don’t let us crazy waitlisters ruin your moment.

i think you could still get in
i just got accepted with a 30 act too and my gpa is a 4.04

@ocgirl: my apologies for misunderstanding!! no you never ruin my moment, trust me!!! I am sorry but you know everyone is saying waitlisted people are overqualified! you shall be in your favorite school I am sure! good luck to you!

…ocgirl are you there? again my sincere apologies! my mother tongue is not English so it happens sometimes that I misunderstand others’ words…

@dawncoming: No problem ( : You speak pretty good English - don’t worry about it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence - I hope I get into my dream school too!

Looks like things are getting pretty heated in this forum… everybody needs to take a breather! I sincerely believe that we will all end up exactly where we belong… as long as we all worked hard on our apps and put our best foot forward, AND maintain the right attitude. Waitlisters and rejectees: April 1st! Stay positive!

Thanks guys! It’s good to know there are others in the same place :)

Good luck to those hearing back from schools soon. Conrgrats to those who got in…wish I was in your place!
