Deferred but optimistic - my plan

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect, and while I was not jumping out of my seat to see that my decision was deferred, it intrigued me. I took it as a challenge. And while I know I will be happy at Boston College or Penn State, my other two top schools, UNC is the one I want most. So, I have decided to stay positive and step up my game. I just wanted to post my ideas on here to get other's opinions on them.

-My first semester grades should raise my GPA (hopefully 4.3 to 4.6)
-I'm volunteering for an animal shelter that gives abandoned dogs homes, as well as volunteering at an orphanage.
-I'm also applying for a summer business internship in NYC, but I will likely be informed of a decision by mid-February so I can include it in my follow up letter if I get accepted, which I plan to. (I'm applying to go to Kenan-Flager)
- Maybe a little personal, but I am going to ask them if I can write another essay. It will illystrate my diversity (I'm a URM and gay) and I think with my writing skills I can convey a powerful story.

Thanks in advance for any opinions. :) My stats are on the EA thread.

From oos and no one from our high school except for recruited athletes have been accepted–no one has ever been deferred…so that is a positive sign I guess…But I am trying to figure out the next steps…gladly will take suggestions…I already work and have volunteered at the same place for 4 years play two varsity sports…and have a continuing internship …Really want to go to UNC…just need to think of ways to turn the deferral into an acceptance

Good News: they deferred less students this year than previous years. They said they planned to defer 1400 applicants instead of the 2,000 or so from the previous year. The fact that you were deferred is a decent sign considering they could have flat out rejected you.

Bad News: the acceptance rate from the deferral pool is fairly low: about 15-20%. So that means they will likely only accept 200-250 of the deferred applicants.

That sounds like a good plan. In addition, you should email or write a letter letting them know how much you want to go. If you know that you will attend if you are accepted, tell them. They want to accept people who are passionate about Carolina and who really want to be there. You should also contact an admissions officer and find out exactly why you were deferred so that you can make sure to improve on that the most. Good luck!

gman–that sounds like a fantastic plan. And your positive attitude is great. In my all-too-lengthy life, I’ve found that attitude plays a huge role in success. I’m no follower of Norman Vincent Peale, the positive-thinking prophet (whom you younguns have probably never heard of, LOL; he was big back during the '50s, which was even a tad early for me)…but I do think he had a point. A positive attitude moves mountains!

I would definitely recommend writing and sending an additional essay. In fact, don’t even ask 'em – just do it. From what I understand, UNC puts a ton of emphasis on essays. And, since this one is “extra credit,” you can write it about whatever you like. If you’re writing about something you’re passionate about, I think the results can be fabulous.

Best wishes. I still don’t understand why you were deferred. I know from personal experience that college admissions are pretty wonky. Nonetheless, I’m mystified. It makes no sense to me. and, hopefully, it will make no sense to the adcoms when they re-review your app. :)
