My son received a letter indicating that he was deferred from Early Decision to Regular Admission. What are his chances of getting admitted through regular admissions? Does anyone know statically what his chances are? He applied to the Game Design Program. If he switches his major to another Communications program at the school-What are his chances of admission?

He has a lower overall GPA but has over a 4.0 average this year-he is determined to go to college. His test scores are higher than average for the college.

The game design program is the hardest program to get into. My older son was turned down from it several years ago when it was still pretty new. I know the official admissions person will chime in real soon, but I would caution your son from applying under a different major. It’s impossible (from what I understand) to switch into game design from another major so if that’s his plan, it’s not going to work. I wonder if it’s possible to minor in Game Design? I understand that new minors that will take effect in the fall are not showing on the website. Good luck to your son Collegemom!

Hi kathiep, thank you for chiming in! Yes, our Game Design program is the most competitive major we offer on campus. Due to its high expectations of incoming students and the limited enrollment nature of the program, it can also be quite difficult to switch into the major further down the road.

Collegemom, I would recommend that your son contacts his admission counselor and has a conversation about what he wants to do with his degree. As Kathiep shared, we have many new minors and specializations, including a game production specialization in business. Depending on what he wants to do in the field, a different major might be a better fit. For example, we now also have a specialization in game writing within the Professional Writing program! There are a few options that could be a nice match. Here as an admission counselor, I have become well versed in the career options that are out there for our many different majors.

Regardless of what your son might be considering at this time, I would still recommend that he reaches out and has a conversation with his counselor. A deferment can feel disheartening, but an admission counselor can really address specifically what that means and how to approach moving forward.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions!

Is anyone hearing back from regular decision for Champlain yet? Champlain is my sons #1 choice but we are still waiting on a response from his app for Game Design. Any idea when we could be getting a response back?

Hi tobydee,
We are planning on releasing the majority of our regular decision applications at the end of March, around the 25th. We know it’s a tough wait, but there’s only a few weeks left!

Thanks for letting me know. Frustrating since that is the one he is waiting on to make a decision and he sent it in mid December. Most other schools have responded already. Do both acceptance and rejections go out together around the 25th or does one go before the other? What about the financial aid packages? Will that come separate?

I do understand the excitement to hear the decision, especially with our school being his first choice! We offer the three different deadlines to give students the option of when they’d like to hear back from us; Early Decision is able to be a faster turn-around because there are less applications, while Regular Decision takes much longer because this is when the vast majority of our applications come in, and because it is not a rolling deadline or process. We are a small team of just six counselors who read applications, so it takes quite some time to get through them all! In addition, we have our largest applicant pool in history, so it is taking a little longer than usual. However, we are working hard to get through all of the applications in the next two weeks so that we can send our letters out as soon as possible! In fact, the date we are planning on sending out our letters this year is actually a week earlier than we sent them last year!

I believe all letters, both acceptance and denials, will be going out around the same time, or very close to it. This does depend on those in authority above me, so I’m not 100% certain yet! Financial aid packages usually come either with the acceptance letter, or within about a week after.

I hope this helps to shed some light on our process over the next few weeks. Please let me know if you have further questions!
