Deferred Chances for Reg.

Hi, I was deferred early ND but accepted early to BC. ND is my top and I was wondering what my chances were now that I have been deferred to regular action. I'm a white male from a catholic/college prep school in illinois with a military program. No legacy but my uncle was the manager of the football team when he attended 10 yrs ago. Here are my stats:

Class Rank: 3/122 (top 3%)
GPA: 4.55 Weighted
All AP and Honors Classes
SAT: 680 CR, 710 M, 720 W (1390/2110) *I'd like to retake in Jan if they will reach ND in time
ACT: 31 Composite (33 super-scored): 35 eng, 32 math, 25 !reading (i got 33 every other time), 31 science

ECs: Debate Team (multiple awards in the Chicago Debate League), Cross-Country (Top-7 team), Tennis (JV Captain), Latin Club (VP), Peer Ministry (a ton of service), Retreat Leader, Guitar Club, Army JROTC (S-3 NCO), NHS, and multiple others if you need to know more

Awards: National Merit Commended, West Point Sword for JROTC staff position, Ron Berg Memorial Award for Most Improved Debater, Award for Best Debate Record, Illinois State Scholar, Canterbury Service Award, and some others I can't remember at the time

Teacher Rec: excellent, from an alumnus who taught me AP US Hist and Theo. III Honors
Counselor Rec: very good, talked about how I challenged myself by taking AP Physics w/ a former Princeton professor at our school when I didn't have the math requirements

Essay: I thought it was really good, based it on a quote by George Bernard Shaw and talked about how my optimism and passion for service make me unique and can contribute to the ND community. I'm afraid the last cpl sentences might have looked "Rudy-ish" b/c I said that in my experiences w/ ND I've grown attached to the community and feel that I can contribute to it.

I would appreciate it SO MUCH if anyone could respond with any insights or tips on how to improve my application. I would also like to learn more about the process the adcomm goes through for deferred applicants, when I visited the admissions officer said that the entire application was reviewed again but I've also heard that only some parts are. Thanks. GO IRISH!

I'm guessing you were deferred because of your ACT score.

My advice is to contact your rep and let her/him know how much you want ND. Your rep is your advocate so make it work.

Yeah, EA is very scores oriented. Though it's rather unofficial, the cutoff as inferred from admissions talks for EA is a 1450/33. While this isn't a strong and fast rule, it could certainly be the reason you were deferred. I agree with bus52, though. Talk to your rep. Ask some questions. Show that you're still interested. In addition, talk to your guidance counselor. Ask him/her to talk to ND as well. You're definitely a strong applicant, and your application doesn't really seem to need much revision.

thank you very much. do you think my scores will hurt me in regular as well? I'm confident that I can move my 1390 SAT into the 1400s but I dpn't know how far.

This worries me because we have very similar stats! I only applied RD though... good luck!

I talked to my rep and he seemed happy that ND was my first choice and that I was sending in additional materials. I'm going to take the SAT again but, with my scores as they are now, how are my RD chances?

I'm glad you contacted your rep. If you check out lasts years accepted thread for RD, it looks like the average SAT score was about a 2100. Of course, there are legacy students etc in that average, but I think you are competitive. If you retake and bring it up even more, all the better.

Keep in contact with your rep. Also, see if you can add anything to your file-ask your rep if your file needs beefing up. I reread your list of accomplishments and wonder if you have any one thing that has maybe happened since you applied early that could add a little punch to your app.

Good luck.

thanks; a cpl things actually: Kairos retreat leader (my rep was one as well), city's student of the month, Illinois State Scholar

Okay, I am sending additional materials, took the Jan. SAT and felt like I moved everything up, hopefully I'll have at least a 1430, and I kept my class rank at 3/121. How are these semester grades? How big of a role will they play?
AP English IV: A+
Latin IV Literature: A
Honors Trig: A
AP European History: A
AP Physics: B+ (but this is the class my counselor talked about in my recommendation, saying it was academically brave of me to take it w/o the math "requirements"
Honors Theology IV: A
Military IV: A

You're only in Trig as a senior? That may be the issue.........

its precalc and trig

actually, you know what? it probably will be a problem. I mean, with the impressive credentials of being the mom of a daughter at nd, you must be right. I don't know what I was thinking applying to nd when I was only in honors precalc/trig. I guess I'll just call admissions and tell them to throw out my application.

Hang in there mdebater--I think the above responses esp with regard to staying in touch with the rep from your area are all very helpful. This is a tough time right now with regard to patience. Try to take the approach that if it is meant to be, then you will be accepted. And, if by some chance it does not happen, then you will be better for it as well. Stay positive and focused! Good Luck!!!

You know, no one really knows what admissions is looking for--we are all really just guessing.

hahahahahaha

thanks, nd AL. I do appreciate the responses very much (at least the constructive, non-pretentious/stupid ones). I just had a very hard time believing that being in precalc/trig was what caused my deferral. Sorry if I came off as impatient or overly sarcastic--probably just a side effect of little sleep and watching The Colbert Report too often. But my last question still stands: I sent in additions to my application. Good midyear grades (despite my Cro-Magnon level of math). Great class rank. And probably an SAT score of about 1430, who knows, maybe higher. Does anyone know how large of a role midyear grades play? With my provided information, how are my chances? (i know its hard to guess, but w/e)

the pre-calc is definitely not the problem, i can promise that.

seriously, if they did it that way, they would be blaming your middle school for not teaching you enough because you can only advance a class each year in high school and algebra 1 is where most people start

i got in and im in pre-calc right now... you look pretty good, just keep showing interest and pray... the latter is what i believe seriously helped me

thank you, BobbyC. My SAT's just got back and I moved up:
Critical Reading: 760
Math:710
Writing:720
CR/M: 1470
Total: 2190
With this new information, how are my chances?

wow, thats terrific! congratulations!

much better i believe
