Reccomendations:

Got a great rec from Bob Kerry as well as my supervisor at the New School.

Awesome rec from TA at Columbia (talks about my interest and knowledge in electronics)

Also got reccomendations from my Physics, Chemistry, and U.S. History teachers.

what killed me was that they checked 1st quarter grades and i had one C. (my guidance counselor stated that I was sick in my midyear)

This is how my midyear report stacks up (1st quarter/second quarter/ midterm exam/overall):

AP Calc BC- C/A/A/B
AP Chemistry- A/A/B/A
AP Physics- A/A/A/A
AP Economics B/A/A/B
AP English B/B/B/B
Business Law A/A/A/A

So here’s my list of colleges:

Cornell (ED)

MIT (roll of the dice)

Columbia

Brown

Carnegie Mellon

JHU

Princeton

Upenn

TCNJ

Please rate my chances. Again, I will be grateful for your comments. Be honest.

probably your gpa that messed you up

you have a decent shot of rd, IMO

Woah you got deferred ED??? Your stats are very good.

I don't understand your GPA. Why is your unweighted so low, while your weighted relatively high? You've only taken one AP test...

thanx

tchaikovsky, they checked my first MP grades and I had a C in calc bc due to me being sick.

btw honors are weighted at my school

your gpa killed you

What does MP mean?

marking period or quarter

Oh, nevermind. You're including your grades from first semester senior year.

Hmmm...Surprised you were rejected ED by Cornell...I guess it was your GPA. 3.62 UW is a bit light for Cornell and all the Ivies. On the other hand, your ECs and SATs are impressive. You would think that would mitigate the GPA. Never can tell. Anyway...

Cornell - I'd say 50% based on your SATs, SAT2s and ECs, but with the ED rejection, I don't know. Let's say 30%

MIT (roll of the dice) - Really. 15%.

Columbia - 20%

Brown - 20%

Carnegie Mellon - 90%

JHU - 70%

Princeton - 15%

Upenn - 25%

TCNJ - Without a doubt. They'll probably offer you scholarship money.

As I said above, you've got great ECs and test scores, but the GPA is definitely a problem. With that said, I think you have better than average chances at all the Ivies and MIT (most of which accept only 10% of their applicants. Exceptions: Penn accepts about 20% and Cornell about 30). I wouldn't be surprised if you were accepted at one of those schools and wait listed at another.

With ED deferral, Cornell is extremely unlikely. The GPA is low- probably why they didn't accept you, and your midyear grades are no better than your previous grades.

btw i am sending a supplement. i'm currently in the process of applying for a third patent.

3 B's this past semester WILL NOT help

bump..............

baykin:

Are you Asian? if so, it has been my experience that it is more difficult for a qualified Asian applicant to get into the Ivy Leagues because Asians are over represented in the student makeup at those universities in comparison to their overall numbers in the population. I wuldn't hope for an acceptance after a deferral ED - if it happens you can be pleasantly surprised. The chances are even slimmer then the % for RD at those schools. Did you apply to any safety schools or only to this heavy list?

wow... great stats altho gpa probably messed you up. since you got deferred ED from cornell, i would place MIT, columbia, upenn, and princeton to be huge reaches under RD

Sry to hear about your deferral, but it looks like you'll still have some good opportunities!

Cornell: Slight Reach (Match before deferral)
MIT: Reach
Columbia: Reach
Brown: Reach
Carnegie Mellon: Safe Match
JHU: Match
Princeton: Reach
UPenn: Reach
TCNJ: Safety

Best of luck!!!

I think most of the schools are out your league except for Carnegie Mellon & TCNJ. I think Cornell was hoping that - given your scores - you could show them that you are willing to work hard; a 3.5 unweighted first semester isn't convincing for someone of your caliber. You are in the game and your scores/ECs will make them give you a second look and one or of the couple big ones may land in your favor, but the GPA hurts. :/

***? Perfect SATscore + US patent and they deferred you? Shame.
