My son just found out yesterday that they want to see 7th semester grades before making a decision. He applied with a 3.2 (unweighted) and 28 ACT score. He has an upward curve of grades overall and will likely get a gpa of 3.5+ for 7th semester. I don't know enough about MI state's admissions process to know if he stands a good chance, a slight one, 50/50?

that is really strange, I know people who have gotten in with waaay lower stats (try 16 on the ACT). I would say if he could get a 3.5 this coming semester, that that would really help him get it. Also maybe if he thinks he can score higher on the ACT (which really, is dumb because 28 is a great score) maybe that could help.

Isaac, please stop. A 16 on the ACT is well into the bottom 25% (middle 50% is 23-28 ACT) and the middle 50% of GP is 3.4-3.8. My guess would be that if he really did score a 16 on the ACT (with ~3.0 GPA like you said on the other thread) and was admitted then there are other factors at work or you don’t know the full story.

OP, my guess would be just that they want to make sure his grades are on the upswing. With a 3.5+ GPA this semester, he’s got a pretty good shot. I’ve noticed that they deffer a lot of low GPA/high ACT students, probably to make sure that the grades are catching up to their great test scores.

Isaac - I’ve heard of a few, random kids who have gotten in with unusually low scores such as a 2.9 gpa and a 25 ACT. But I think this is extremely rare and this person was initially deferred also.

Other than that, it seems like it’s a bit of a crap shoot for anyone with less than a 3.5 and at least a 25-26 on the ACT. I have a daughter who is first year college and last year kids with scores similar to my son could go either way. She got in with a 3.75 and 27 ACT and 6 APs but my son isn’t quite as good of a student so I wasn’t sure where he stood. She ended up going to Western to study something that they don’t even offer at State.

Thanks Romanigypsyeyes, that’s good to know.
