Hey I just got my deferral letter today in the mail. i was shocked. i thought villanova was gonna be a match for me, but my guidance counselor told me villanova is really competitive this year. he said it is actually tougher to get in EA than regular. i applied with a 1220 SAT and just sent them a 1310 i just got. i hope that will help me get in regular. what do you all think i should do ?? anyone else who got deferred please share.

I'm thinking the first round was a numbers game. I applied online and my novasis kept showing that my essay was not in. I e-mailed them twice and they never responded. I finally called and they said the essay was not in the file. I e-mailed it to a specific person on the 18th and she responded that she had received it and placed a copy in my file. On the 19th, I checked Novasis and saw that I was deferred.

My numbers are midrange for them - 3.6 W, 1260 SATs - all the other stuff is good - refs great - EC's well rounded between officers, sports, work, art - plus they have a few kids from my school who have done very well there and I've gone Catholic schools all my life.

So here's my thinking - as you know from the deferral letter - they had a big jump in EA's - hard to handle in their timeframe - so they ran the numbers and skimmed the top for files to review and filled their 25% EA pool with those folks who looked good. Since my numbers were midrange, I didn't make that cut . There was obviously a gap in my application since they lost the essay - I know it was there because they acknowledged the receipt of the online application and I had called early on to be sure all was there - so I believe that no one had even looked at my file yet - and maybe you're in the same boat?

That said - your 1310 should help you jump up - good going!

Waiting is the hardest part. Good luck.

It is GPA that they obviously care about the most.

The only three people I have seen deferred (The three of us) all have "low" GPA's.

I was deferred with a 3.2 UW 3.9 W GPA and a 1510 SAT.

Now compare our statistics to the accepted students. Most of them have 1280-1400 SAT range and 3.7+ UW GPA's.

Hopefully Regular Decision will bring more luck to those who were deferred.

i agree

i remember reading somewhere that they hold the EA kids to an INCREDIBLY high standard, way more than most schools--anyway, I was deffered with a 3.4 and a 29 act, 7 APs, 100000s of leadership roles in 4-year activities, lots of honors and minority status

a waste of $70 bones? i think so...

True - its a tough school to get into - and it sounds like the GPA must be the issue - if you look at those who were accepted on the other thread, there is at least one with a low GPA - and reasonable SAT's - but who knows - they may be legacy - or something unusual. I'd love to continue my Catholic education at Nova - its an awesome place with a super science program and the bball team is hot!

But.....I just wonder if the EA pool was tough, what kind of competition is there in the RD pool! I have debated taking the SAT's again - but to tell the truth - if my curriculum and achievements aren't there - then I just don't think another 50 points on the SAT's will make a difference. As for the SAT's - I've never taken a prep class - never studied - just gotten a good night's sleep and gave it my best shot - may be stupid - but I am who and what I am - and if I'm not their cup of tea - I'll take my talents someplace where I can succeed and not feel at a disadvantage.

At least its Christmas break, our nuns go out of state to their motherhouse early for the holiday - so we have two and a half weeks off - and the weather has been great for snowboarding while we wait! At this point, I have stooped to superstition and I'm wearing T shirts and sleeping on a pillow under a blanket - all from the number one school on my list - that I can handle - taking the SAT's again is a waste of $ for me.

hmm...why did my friend get deferred w/ a 4.0 UW (All AP's) and 1450? It was his only safety school, he's applying to Princeton, Penn, Caltech, Dartmouth, CMU but nowhere on his app did he mention them.

Possibly a terrible essay or teacher reqs(unlikely). Maybe he made it obvious that it was his saftey school and the adcoms didn't like it.

Perhaps a part of his application was missing.

Other than that I have no clue, ask him to call the office of admission and find out.

Well his "Why Villanova?" essay wasn't too great...He halfassed it basically so that could've been it most likely. But still, why would they turn down such a qualified applicant? They should've bribed him w/ merit $ or so I'd think. OH well.
