Hi all, I got deferred when I applied ED this fall, and I’m wondering if the admissions board takes that fact into consideration (showing interest, etc), or if they don’t know you applied ED and just read you solely as an RD applicant.
Any information is much appreciated!

Will they know you applied ED? Of course. How much will it factor in your eventual outcome? Who is to say? Your curiosity is natural but no one can give you an answer.

Yes, of course they know you applied ED.

In 25+ years of doing alumni admissions stuff, I have never seen a statistic or study from Brown to show whether ED applicants have a higher or lower acceptance rate than applicants in the regular round. Brown officially says the acceptance rate is the same and that thet assume that every applicant who applies really wants to go.

So I would say that your chance of getting in is no different as an ED applicant.

It’s seems like it would dilute your chances since you are competing against many more applicants for even fewer spots.

Hopefully, you took the opportunity to add to your application anything the Adcom should consider that you left out the first time.

It’s also clear that they are your number one choice so hopefully, you reinforced that message too.

At least you were deferred ED and not rejected. That’s puts you in a much better position than many others. Hopefully you will receive good news the end of this month. Where else did you apply?

“It’s seems like it would dilute your chances since you are competing against many more applicants for even fewer spots.”

Sort of. Obviously to be deferred from ED means Brown sees something interesting. This is much better than the vast majority of RD applications.

Yes there will be plenty of interesting RD applicants but the deferred group has passed several hurdles – which will trip up many in the RD pool. Ultimately, it’s of no use to gauge the relative chances, however.

But doesn’t Brown defer the majority of their ED applicants anyway?

Risubu, yes, I believe I heard about 60% somewhere (don’t hold me to that!)

FlyMeToTheMoon: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCSD, UCSB, UCSC, Pomona, Brandeis, Yale, UPenn, NYU, and I got into Tulane.

Thanks for the answers guys!

My “Get Decision” button was reset as an ED applicant. Other deferrees see this as well?

Almost time peeps!

@jabberwoo123 Mine is reset as well. And now, there is actually a list under financial aid section of all the things they received. I’m relieved they got my IDOC, CSS, FAFSA, etc., but I wish they had this little fin aid set up during the ED season!

@risubu ditto. Seems like they have all my fin aid stuff too- neat

I was deferred too, and I’m just so anxious. Brown still is my first choice after all these months and other acceptances; I don’t know what I’d do if I don’t get in It’s been my dream for a really long time. Hopefully the odds will be in our favor

Did you guys send in anything extra after your deferral?

How hard is it to get into Brown?

I sent in some minor little things: Our varsity tennis team had the highest overall GPA in the state of NY, my GPA went up exponentially, and I received a Gold-level President’s Service Volunteer Award. It wasn’t anything that would necessarily make too much of a difference, but at least I tried. I really really love Brown, and I’d do anything to get a better shot at getting in.

@kids1656 Brown is actually quite hard to get into. It has one of the lowest acceptance rates in the country.

@DreamsAreReal I sent them some minor updates as well, nothing too exciting. Got a scholar athlete award, outstanding student award, entered quiz bowl and didn’t win haha. May the odds be in the favor of the deferred.

Yes, I know! We’ve suffered through the longest wait. Good luck to you! I hope you get in! I’ve heard of deferred students getting accepted, so it could happen to any of us. My fingers have been crossed for a while now. Might as well glue them together like that forever haha

Oh, I also have a question…I’ve heard from other students that admissions officers look at deferred applicants last when making decisions because they’ve already “looked over them before.” However, doesn’t that mean most of the spots will most likely be taken by the normal RD pool applicants by the time they get to the deferred applications? I’ve always been sort of confused about this.
