Deferred enrollment for LDS mission

Hi there!

I am a teacher of Seniors and also a parent. I am trying to find colleges that will defer enrollment while a student goes on their LDS mission. I know BYU will do this, but I am looking for other options to offer.

Anyone with ideas please?

Is it a one year commitment or two? Many schools don’t have a problem with a one year deferment. I don’t know how common it is for two years.

Is it typical for students to go on a mission as soon as they’ve finished high school?
Most of the LDS kids that I’ve known start college, then go on a mission after the first year or two, then return to the college to finish.

Considering that length of the LDS mission, it would be wiser for these young people to apply during the mission. They will grow and change so much during that time, that the list they would make before going and the list that they would make after a year or so on the mission are likely to be very different. Pre-planning to save on logistics could include arranging for their referees to write draft letters of recommendation that would only need minimal editing when the list is finalized.

Thanks for the info. The young man would be going to school for a year and then taking two off for his mission.
