Deferred for a semester

I was going to start as a freshman at IU this Fall, but unfortunately I had to defer until the Spring semester. I hope eventually to be admitted as a standard admit to Kelley. I plan to take two community college classes this Fall, before I start at IU. I was thinking about taking at least one of the Kelley prerequisite classes at community college this Fall, figuring it would be easier at community college than at IU, and I would get one of them out of the way. However, the IU advisor recommended that I not do that. She said it would be much better for me to take those classes at IU rather than at a community college. Do you agree with that advice?

Assuming I follow that advice, I would take a science class at community college (just to get that requirement out of the way) and probably a basic math class, which I am hoping would leave me better prepared to do well in Finite math at IU.

Does this make sense? If not, what would you suggest?

Have you got confirmation from UI that you can take these classes while deferred? If not, I would start there. You don’t want to be considered a transfer student, that happens at some colleges and can affect aid.

I’d take the advisor’s advice. She may be subtly trying to tell you that a good grade from a CC on one of those classes won’t carry as much weight in Kelley admissions as a good grade at UI would.

It’s hard to say whether to take the advisor’s advice without more context but I can tell you that often the General advisors don’t give the best advice for getting into Kelley (you can search threads about M211 for some atrocious advice they have given). I would say you need to make plan that allows you to get into Kelley with the least amount of resistance. The only reason I would say you shouldn’t take a CC class is if it’s an easy class you’re going to take at IU to get into Kelley. Don’t waste an easy Kelley admissions requirement at CC because that will pressure to take a more challenging requirement at IU.

You should study the requirements for standard admission to Kelley rather than being spooked by an advisor’s advice, unless the advisor can give you good reasons for taking their advice.

The main direct admit list of classes is very clear cut:

Completion of at least 12 credit hours from the following courses on the IU Bloomington campus:

BUS-K 201 or BUS-K 303

Choose one additional option from this list: ENG-W 131*, BUS-C 104, BUS-C 204, BUS-L 201, or BUS-G202 AND BUS-D270

Choose two additional options from this list: BUS-A 201, BUS-A 202, ECON-E 201, ECON-E 202, MATH-M 118*, MATH-M 119*, ECON-E 370*, OR BUS-A 100 AND BUS-G 202

The entire list of requirements is here:

Classes that many students take before getting to IUB from the above list include W131 and E201, which can be tough grading at IUB. Also, having credit for E201 allows you to take Bus-G202 at IUB instead of a more difficult three-credit class. You need 12 credits taken at IUB in the correct groups. Some of the other classes, like W131 and E201 can be taken at community college and transfered to IUB. Check the credit transfer list to see what will transfer from which colleges.

Like Hkem, I recommend the path of least resistance as far as which classes to take at IUB is concerned. Easier classes usually leads to better grades.

Thank you for your advice. I assume if I take ENG - W131 or E201 at community college, those will not satisfy my Kelley prerequisites, because the prerequisites need to be taken on the IUB campus. Is that correct? If so, then the reason for taking E 201 would be so I can take Bus-G202, which has econ as a prerequisite? And the reason to take W131 would not be to satisfy a Kelley prerequisite, but instead because it would satisfy a general IU graduation requirement? Is that right? Do these econ and writing classes also satisfy some general education requirement? Thanks!

ENG W131 and E201 would satisfy Kelley prerequisites. My daughter brought both (from HS credit) as a freshman.

But I thought it says: “Completion of at least 12 credit hours from the following courses on the IU Bloomington campus.” So don’t I have to take one from bullet A, one more from bullet B, and two more from bullet C, while I am at IUB, in order to meet the Kelley prerequisites?

I’m not certain but I have a hunch that scrabblemomb is referring to those classes as counting as Kelley prerequisites for I-core and graduation. What you need is them to count for Kelley admissions. You’re understanding is correct.
