Deferred from EA UGA..

So I got deferred from Early Action at UGA..

It really caught me by surprise.

My stat:

GPA (Weighted): 3.7

Amount of APs taken til Junior year: 6 (AP Music Theory, AP US History, AP Lang, AP Psychology, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics)

Honors taken

SAT : 1100/1600 (this might have been a problem but I thought that UGA would consider my GPA and rigor more..)

EC: Lots of church activities, clubs

Can anyone tell me what might have been a factor?
I was absolutely devastated when I found out I was Deferred..

Now I'm applying for Regular Decision.
Can you guys chance me of getting in RD?
Should I also retake the SAT?

:(

Dasani–Don’t despair! You didn’t receive a rejection! UGA “superscores” SAT, so take it again if it will be in time for RD. Superscore means they take the best score from each SAT section for a total. So you must take it twice for this to work.
Go for it and if it’s meant to be, it will. I’d also document all of those community service hours for church activities, etc… My son only had 3 AP’s under his belt when he applied EA this Fall, so focus on SAT. Best of luck!

I suspect your GPA was a little low for EA. What did you score in the writing section of the SAT? From this link [University of Georgia: News & Information](<a href=“UGA Today - Today’s top news from the University of Georgia”>UGA Today - Today’s top news from the University of Georgia) you can see your GPA and SATs were below the 25% range of early admits.

From the UGA Admissions Blog posted yesterday:

“The middle 50% for deferred students is a 3.40-3.75 GPA, an 1110-1250 SAT with a 573 writing), and a 24-28 ACT. In addition, they averaged 2-5 AP/IB classes.”

Your GPA and rigor look good in this group. SATs which count less are a little low.

Retake the SAT and just do well for the rest of the year and you should have a pretty good chance. Good luck!

Thank you all for your responses…

Yes I am planning on re-taking the SAT… (my only concern is, what if the score comes out exactly the same as my previous one or even lower?? Of course I’m going to study hard over the Christmas break… but still.)

My GPA is predicted to be 3.6 (including my first semester of Senior year grades)
And on transcript it would appear that I have taken total of 9 AP classes. (I’m dropping an AP Statistic class to regular one next semester though, for if I continued in the AP stat class, it’s predicted to be low and possibly jeopardize my GPA…)

Can you guys chance me ?? I’m realllly desperate to know…
UGA truly is my number one :(

Hey Dasani—If you were my son/daughter I would tell you that if you get overly stressed it will negatively impact your SAT. If you score the same there is no harm done. Remember, you will do part II of the application, so take this opportunity, yes opportunity, to shine! Keep it simple, to the point and show UGA who you are. Have a LA teacher help you with these. If you improve your SAT scores, even better.

If you don’t do as well on the SAT, use the essays to strengthen your application. Remember, UGA superscores, so even if you do worse it WON’T hurt you! They’ll take your highest. If it’s meant to be, it will happen. Stressing will not help you. Use your energy for the positive and don’t psych yourself out! Don’t get into all the minutia of every number. You are not a number, so try to relax and focus on a great fit between yourself and a school. That’s where you’ll be most happy and successful. It very well may be UGA. :)

Don’t worry so much! Just do well on your secondary application and let it be known that you are deserving of admission. And don’t worry about doing worse the second time around…my math and writing scores were both lower the second time I took it, but UGA takes the highest scores from multiple sittings. Based just on numbers, I wouldn’t say you’re totally safe for UGA, but you have a rigorous schedule and probably good ECs, so that should help where the numbers don’t. Just submit your application ASAP.

Do u guys think I’ll get in to uga???

I have about a 3.7 gpa weighted
1200/1600 sat
660 math, 540 reading, 520 writing
3 ap classes… Chemistry, physics, macroeconomics

I play the guitar… A LOT… Practice for a few hours a day.
I play in my church’s youth band
visit an elderly woman at the assited living home every week
guitar club 11th/12th and technology club 10th

thanks in advance

Oh and planing on majoring in physics if you guys need to know that.

Would dropping an AP Stat class make a great impact on my chance of getting into UGA??

you say your GPA weighted is a 3.7? well that probably transfers to a 3.3-3.4 UW, which is what they look at.

i’m very surprised you didn’t get in dasani! you’re better off than a lot of my other friends who were accepted. :
dont despair as others said! i’m sure you’ll get in regular admission. really! if they reject you, i’d be HEAVILY surprised.

ilovenerds, below an 1100? not likely. averages scores were between 1240-1390.

its actually 1160 - 1360

no, for early admission. ilovenerds said people got in early admission with below 1100s.

oh ok
well I did hear about people who got in with 1700-1800s

actually you’re right ilyssa. hm.

Ilyssa - I believe they look at your weighted score. Actually their GPA calculation is complicated. But I am 100% sure they see my GPA as 3.7. I calculated mine according to their rules, and it came out just as that.

As far as SAT scores go - It’s the third factor that they look at… although it IS important, I believe and saw that it wasn’t the priority factor that determined admission. I know a friend from last year that had lower SAT than mine and were accepted. Although I don’t know what her circumstances were, it just tells that UGA looks at other factors rather than just the SAT score… But I AM still going to retake the SAT and hope for much higher score…

The deferred students this year’s middle 50% statistics were

GPA: 3.40-3.75
SAT: 1110-1250

if u calculated ur GPA towards UGA standards, then it would be 3.7 UW… W is with a full point for AP classes and half a point for honors. UW is merely no extra points besides a half a point for AP classes. There is a huge difference between UW and W.

That dont really look at the writing score, so if a 1700 or 1800 with writing translates to a 1230 or above then there would be a good chance of admission early.for example, i applied with an 1800, but 1260 without writing and got accepted.

In regular decision, they do look at more then test scores ,of course.
