I applied Single Choice Early Action, and I just got a letter in the mail telling me that I have been deferred and will be placed into the regular admissions pool. Is there anything I should be trying to update or send besides simply finishing my semester?

I've retaken the SATs and ACTs since applying, the ACTs I got a 29 composite score, (same as my first score, however) and my SAT scores haven't been received yet. Tulane is my first choice and I'd really love to go there, so any things I could either improve on in hopes of being accepted would be great. Both scores have been registered to send to Tulane.
I'm also planning on talking to my college counselor at school, and calling up the Admissions office and talking to them soon.

Other than seeing if your SAT score is higher, the only thing that I can think of is contacting the admissions officer (if you haven’t already). I have spoken to mine a few times via email. It seems like since Tulane has no application fee, many people just apply just for the sake of applying. I think showing sincere interest goes a long way. Also, have you visited campus or attended a information session in your town?

I agree with Gabby … try to raise your ACT score a point, and definitely do whatever you can to show interest. Visit the campus, schedule a visit with an admissions officer, and when you get back home send him/her a nice thank you letter (of course mentioning that Tulane is your #1).

My D found the easiest way to raise her ACT score was the Science section. If there’s one section on the ACT that’s holding you back, do additional prep in that area. Good luck!

ivan: so sorry you were deferred, but I think you are focusing on the wrong aspect of your grades; based on your previous posts, your GPA is a 2.9 which is on the low side for Tulane…good idea to submit your senior year grades (assuming they have shown much improvement), as well as the ideas posted above…

by the way, I don’t think that the 29 is the reason you were deferred; you could try to bring it up, but if the senior grades show major improvement, that could really help you more than one point on the ACT, IMO

Thanks everyone for all the advice.
Gabby, I have emailed my region’s admission officer, about the formatting of my personal statement. I noticed that it didn’t preserve any line breaks or anything when I submitted it online, so I emailed him an attachment of the essay. I haven’t visited the campus or attended any information sessions. My cousin goes to Tulane so I will be making a visit sometime soon, however I figured to wait until I got a decision before I travel all the way down there?
Rodney, thanks for the advice. My senior year is shaping up to be my best academic year so far, and I’m not taking an easy schedule. A full schedule and 2 APs, and I have all A’s for the first quarter. I hope that my grades can reveal my improvement over the years, since my sophomore year was really tough for me, I switched from a small private school to a large public school, and this hit hard on my grades.
NewHope, thanks for the advice - I’m not sure if I’ll take my ACTs again, but if I do, I’ll be sure to review the science section, as it was also my weakest section.

ivan: please update us on your results later on…sounds like you are on the right track…good luck!! and make sure your guidance counselor is on board; he/she could be immensely helpful in pulling for you and your grade improvement…

Send a letter or email to the admissions counselor letting them know that this is your first choice and you are still interested in being placed in the general pool. Highlight some of your strengths and explain why your low GPA is not indicative of your ability. And let them know what you will offer to Tulane if you are chosen to be a student. Good Luck and keep us posted!

I agree with the statements above, with the exception that you need to pick up the phone and call your admissions counselor. They are some of the nicest people around and can advocate for you in the admissions process if you become more than statistics on a piece of paper. Ask for 10 minutes of their time, state your case and convey your enthusiasm. Let us know how it goes and good luck.

Just letting everyone know that I sent in a letter, as well as my resume. My SAT scores went up, now I’m at a 1870!
I also have arranged for my first quarter grades to be sent in as well from my school, as I’m very proud of them (all A’s and 1 B) and like them to be considered, even if they are waiting for just my semester grades.

I hope I can report back with good news soon!

Hi Ivan - certainly sounds like you are on the right track. Just keep in mind they are totally buried at the moment, so it might take some time. Good Luck!!

Thanks for all the support - just a quick update. My grades have never been better I ended the 1st Quarter with All A’s and a B+ in Physics, and I’ve got straight As going for the second quarter. This is the best I’ve ever done academically and I’m really proud, i’m not kicking myself into gear just to get into college, I’m actually trying to change my study habits and school life around, so I do well in college. :)

That’s excellent Ivan. You have every right to be pleased and proud. You are spot on that these are the study habits you need to excel in college, especially at a competitive school like Tulane. I sure would think when they see those results you will move into the accepted column. We are all pulling for you I am sure.
