I was actually very surprised at my deferral notice.. I was sure Wash U. was
way out of my league..

Brief stats: 1460 sat, top 20%, UW: 3.73, some extra curricular activities,
decent essays, good recommendations

My first semester grades are not so great..
B in all honors/ap classes and 1 C in ap calculus BC.. What should I do to
explain this? and what else can I do? thanks so much in advance.

deferral is a bitch. my suggestion, and what I did, is to write them a letter to explain all the circumstances of your grades and a sort of "appeal" letter that tells them its still your first choice. also, carefully read your deferral letter, it will tell you which parts of your application are slightly deficient and what you need to do to help your chances.

i agree with sarasvati, but add that you shouldnt just tell them its your first choice. Say why its your first choice, but be careful to avoid sucking up.
