Hello! So I got deferred from Wellesley today, but I was wondering if that meant I would then go through early evaluation or just regular decision?
Also, I never got the chance to schedule an interview for ED, but now that I’m deferred, should I go for one?
Definitely, definitely go for an interview this time around. It can help tip the scale in your favor, and it would show the school you’re still interested in them in spite of being deferred.
I got deferred as well. Good luck to us both!
Helloooo! I was deferred ED last year. It would be a good idea to take the opportunity to get an interview! However, you would have to actively let someone in admissions know you were doing this. When deferred, you don’t have to resubmit anything, but if you have any major accomplishments between now and March, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to tell them about it. Not exactly sure who to talk to, though…
@Astrofeline were you admitted to Wellesley after being deferred? What did you do/submit after your deferral that got you accepted? Do people look at you differently because you were deferred? Any help would be appreciated
@cierramist Yes, I was admitted when the regular decisions came out in March I actually didn’t do anything afterwards because my guidance counselors did not help me at all, and I didn’t want to take the chances of screwing something up myself. But I remember being in the same position last year and people were saying to send admissions emails in January about how much you wanted to go to Wellesley and that stuff. I should have done something else now that I can look back, but I thought I was done for!
And no, nobody says “well you were deferred so you don’t belong here,” even though there have been moments when I thought I “barely got in”… But honestly, it doesn’t matter! We’re all here and that’s what matters. I’m willing to answer any questions, no matter how dumb they sound
I don’t think being deferred is something that would/should make other students look at you differently. You made the cut in the end, that’s all that matters. Besides, you don’t have to tell anyone if you don’t want to.
@Astrofeline Thank you so much for replying! I am so, SO nervous for March. I think I’ll email my admissions officer and see if they can tell me what parts of my application need to be stronger for the next round. Do you happen to know who the admissions officer is for Midwestern students, specifically Wisconsin? I can’t find it anywhere! Congrats on getting accepted without sending anything extra in! Is the RD round a little easier to get into since it isn’t as competitive as the ED round? I’m also so relieved to know that no one would look at me differently if I was an admitted deferred student… that would be awful.
@cierramist There was a list on the website of counselors for each area of the country, but I can’t find it… I’m sorry. I’ll let you know if I do. I thought RD was more competitive than ED? I remember in my deferral letter, it pretty much said “yeah don’t get excited, only 20% of deferrals get in” :/// I’m not sure exactly what the numbers are. All I know is that I’m here and some days I still can’t believe it!
Nobody cares if you were ED or RD or whatever. like I said, you’re all in the same place. That reminds me, I posted a facebook status a few weeks ago about my deferral last year, and another girl from W ecstatically commented and we bonded over being deferred! lol
@Astrofeline All I’ve found is a list of all the counselors, but it doesn’t say which region they overlook! My deferral letter said the same thing, that only around 20% of deferred students get accepted. I just figured that all of the super competitive people applied early, which is why so many are accepted, and that a lot more borderline students apply RD… but that doesn’t explain why only 20% of deferred students get accepted, so maybe RD is harder?? I’m not sure.
Okay phew, because that would suck if you were ostracized after getting into your dream school. That’s so cool that you guys could bond over that! I need to find all the 2015 deferred Wellesley applicants to start a support group :’)
@Astrofeline thanks for all your replies!! so after you got deferred, you just didn’t do anything about it, but you still got in? that sounds incredible :DDD
also the deferral acceptence rate they give out is 20%, but if you look at admission reports like http://www.wellesley.edu/sites/default/files/assets/departments/admission/pdf/admissionreport2015.pdf underneath the acceptance info you see how many applicants get deferred and how many those get in and… to say the least, 20% is a bit of a rough estimate (and to see the last couple of years, just change the 2015 in the url to another year)
so for that interview, should i mention it in a follow up email or something?
@cierramist im completely up for that support group, we should all get matching jackets
I am an international student and I was deferred as well. Campus visit and interview are impossible :(( . Is recommendation from alumnae workable? Yes support group is definitely needed!!! It feels JUST SAD to be deferred by my dream school…Good luck!
