Hey guys, I’m an in state student and got deferred from GA Tech ME for Early action. My stats are 1500 on the new SAT, 34 superscored on the act (34, 34, 34, 35) 12 AP Classes, 4.2 GPA. I am also enrolled in the Distance Math program at Georgia Tech this year and am an avid clarinet player in the school band and have made the United States Army All American Band (USAAAMB). Still confused about the deferral but wondering what my chances are of getting accepted in march?
they just had much much better candidates this year. If a lot of people with you stats applied, they can only accept so many. So you might have been one of the candidates who could have gotten in but just didn’t due to chance.
Did u ppl get a update email frim gatech
Same here. I think GT just really had great applicants this year. It’s simply super competitive with a lot of students with great profiles too.
My son got deferred this year. He’s applying for CS. His scores were— old SAT 2280 (M800, R700, Wr780); ACT 35 (all 35s except 36 in Math and Science); and 11APs by end of senior year (four scores of 5 and one score of 4). He’s a National Merit finalist, 4.0gpa unweighted and in the running for top 1 out of 300+ seniors. He has great ECs but not spectacular. Heard a few kids with similar profile got deferred too this year.
I feel like this particular board should have a header intro that says something like, “Yes, GA Tech is not kidding about holistic review.”
(Edited to add: I wrote a whole long thing here and my computer ate it. Basically: stats are no guarantee with Tech. Plenty of kids with great stats were deferred or denied.)
Son got deferred as well. Major; computer Science. ACT:35, SAT: 1570, 10 APs by the end of Senior year, National Merit Finalist, National Hispanic Scholar, solid recommendations (I believe) and good essays. His extracurriculars were not stellar.
He already got accepted ar WPI, Purdue, UT Austin, Barrett Honors College at ASU and already rejected from CalPoly San Luis Obispo.
I read on another thread that 15% of deferred applicants get accepted. Not very encouraging!
Good luck to everyone.
@pb3577 that’s surprising about CP SLO rejection considering the stats you listed. Perhaps GPA was lower than they wanted (CP uses freshman grades) or there was an error with the application such as missing required classes or candidate didn’t list any applicable course work taken in middle school such as math or language.
