Recently, the Early Action decisions came out for JMU and I got deferred. People with way lower stats than me or similar got admitted and I did not and it is worrying me I won’t get in regular.
-4.0 GPA
3 different honors societies
-member of 4 clubs
involved in performing arts
-captain of team
3 year long employment
consecutive communities service
Could it be the program I applied under is competitive? Or was something lacking? Do you think I’ll get in Regular, and is there anything I should do in the meantime to help their decision? Thanks!
Which instate? This could be a hedge to manage yields … you have a high gpa this is JMU not UVA… they might be waiting for UVa early action expecting that you applied there… call the admissions and make them know your interested in JMU
If JMU is a school that you’d like to attend, then do all you can to improve your chances. You were deferred and not rejected, so there’s still a chance. Have you visited JMU? You should go again; let them know you are interested in them. How were your essays? Maybe you should ask your GC for advice on how to proceed. Good luck.
Meanwhile. Have you applied to other colleges of interest? Have you considered some colleges who offer rolling admissions?
While comparing stats is one thing, a college application is more than that. Please consider speaking with your GC on ways to improve your app, and give the admissions committee a reason to give you another strong look. Good luck.
No, the fact you applied to other in state schools wouldn’t affect JMUs admission. If you didn’t show interest, it’s a possibility you were deferred because JMU thinks you don’t really want them, but rather they were your safety. That’s why showing interest is important. (Go on an official visit ASAP).
Good advice here - do a visit and make sure they marked your interest. And send them your mid-year grades as well. You didn’t mention your SAT or ACT score. Did you go without submitting standardized testing - that could have hurt you as far as early acceptance. With your GPA you should be fine in the regular admission (it is much easier regular admission per their website).
I’m not really sure about the whole (they didn’t accept because they though you wouldn’t attend thing).
My son has a 4.3gpa and 1480 SAT. He did not do a campus visit. He got in early action. But then he is legacy too so they may think better shot at him going.
Was your GPA comprised of AP and Honors classes? If not, they may have considered the rigor associated with it “low” compared to others. Just a guess as we do not have all the information available to admissions. Hang in there.
