I simply can't believe it. I applied EA to a SUNY school and got deferred. They said they wanted to wait and see my midyear report. I honestly don't know what to do now. I applied to MUCH more competitive schools than that. I basically lost all hope for April (RD) results.

It sounds like it would be a good idea to find an even safer safety school.

What are your stats? What kind of college do you want to attend? Perhaps people here can suggest some schools for you to consider.

I'm sorry to hear that. You should definitely find another safety or two quickly; most deadlines are in a week or two. Just as always, make sure that you like and would be happy to attend the schools.

Do you know any strong weakness in your application? If you can, have your GC call and ask why you were deferred. That can give you a much fuller picture of the situation. If you post your stats on here, someone will probably have some school suggestions.

Although I don't want to get your hopes up, I do know a couple of people who didn't get into their safety schools but were accepted at more prestigeous universities.

I think some schools reject applicants because the applicants are so overqualified, the school believes that no real desire to attend their college exists.

that is true. I read an article once about this guy with a perfect 1600 who was valicdictorian that got rejected from UT (before the top 10% rule)

What are your stats and what other schools are you applying to? That would help people predict whether you'll be receiving fat or skinny envelopes in April..

Are you instate for the SUNYs?

what were your STATS?

Yeah... you shouldnt worry (too much)... I got waitlisted at one of my safeties and scholarships to some of my match's last year... Sometimes the school with waitlist/defer you if they dont think that you will attend upon acceptance (in an effort to raise their matriculation rate)

A person in my class signed on my name while using my computer and forgot to log off and he forgot to check the user.

Yeah, I signed on a computer at a local library and low and behold - someone was already logged onto CC and I accidentally posted with their name. Anyway..

My Reccomendations are phenomenal. My Essay was awesome.

I know my scores seem sub par in juxtaposition to this site, but for Binghamton - I thought they'd be fine.

I also mailed in applications to Columbia, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Northwestern, and NYU.

I know, it's an ambitious list. I didn't submit standardized test scores to Bowdoin--and for Middlebury three APs.

As of right now, I think I'm setting myself up for only more dissapointment.

Another safety suggestion would be nice.

After Reading a college guide book, it says the SUNY I applied to (Binghamton) seems to be scores oriented.

"The admissions committee has reviewed your application and feels that we need additional information to help us in our decision-making process. We would like to review your mid-year grades. Your early action application will be deferred to regular admission and will be evaluated for a second time once grades are received."

Your stats are amazing, I think you'll definitely get into NYU. I love NYU and Latin for that matter, and your scores are much higher than mine. Add another safety school in there and stay hopeful. ;-)

If it is any consolation whatsoever, our school valedictorian was deffered/waitlisted/rejected from all of her schools (including her matches and single safety) but got into her top choice. im not kidding at all.

In view of your stats, I would take that paragraph about reviewing additional data (mid year grades) to your GC and have him/her call SUNY. It wouldn't surprise me if they got something mixed or messed up.

lollipop27,,,, what was her top school? and what schools rejected her?? That's pretty interesting.

The problem is that the SUNY schools especially Bing and Stonybrook are going to be pretty numbers based with many students form NYS (especially LI which seems to be a large part of the class) applying many presenting with higher scores (the 2 very important factors are grades and scores).

I would like to also ask how are your regents test grades (which will also be taken in to consideration at SUNY schools) like?

Did you apply for a specific program at Bing (honors college)?

According to Bing's common data set the Mean (average) SAT score was 1250 and the average ACT score was 26.

Close to 60% of the incoming class had scores between 1200 and 1600 (so it does look as bing is stepping up its game). of those that submitted ACT scores, 79% had scores between 24 and 36.
http://buoir.binghamton.edu/cds/CDS_2004.pdf

Your Act score of 27 converts to 1220 (according to the college board)http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/0506/front/ACTtoSAT.html

This could be a factor especially in a strongly numbers based system as the SUNYs. While you fall into the 50% range, you are on the low end of it. Being unhooked this will work against you. Hopefully, you'll get picked up during RD.

I normally don't do chances, but I must say that your list is really, really top heavy (Columbia, Yale, Penn, Dartmouth, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Northwestern are all going to be reaches for you). Depending on where which school you apply to you may get into NYU, but you definitely will not be in the money for any major merit aid so you could be paying a lot out of pocket (NYU is notoriously stingy with aid) .
I think that you need more matches and safetys especially if you are an unhooked candidate. I would also suggest casting a wider net to get out of the bubble because most of the schools on your list are going to be flooded with candidates from NYC (making up the large part of the NYS contigency, many who will knock you out of the box).

Look into some of schools where you will at minimum be able to offer geographic diversity and there are still schools where you would be in line for merit money (Union, Elmira, etc).

At Elmira- you would be eligible for the

Trustee Scholarships

Awarded to all accepted students who have earned a 3.5 GPA (on 4.0 scale as determined by the Office of Admissions) and an SAT I total of 1200 (ACT composite of 27): $15,000 per year, $60,000 over four years. Renewable with a 3.3 GPA on a scale of 4.0

http://www.elmira.edu/admissions/finaid/fa_scholarships.shtml
all the best.

The Ivy's are definetly reaches. I agree with everyone else, you should find some more Matches. like how about a state school like University of Rochester or something.

You should also look at where your scores are closer to the 75% and you could get merit...

Hobart and William Smith If you are in the top 10% it woudl definitely be worth your taking the SAT because you could be in the running for full tuition

Trustee Scholarships are awarded to 40-50 students each year and winners are selected by the Committee on Admissions. Students must meet at least one of the following criteria in order to apply for participation in this scholarship program:

Combined SAT scores of 1250 or higher
ACT composite score of 28 or higher
Rank in the top 10 percent of class
Cumulative GPA of 90 percent or equivalent on a 4.0 scale
In addition, all Trustee Scholar candidates must interview with a member of the admissions staff or an alumni/alumnae representative prior to February 1. Trustee Scholar winners are invited to campus for a recognition weekend, and from that group the full-tuition Hersh and Wood Scholars will be selected. Trustee Scholars are awarded $19,000 annually.

Ursinus

**Reporting of the SAT score or other standardized test results to the Ursinus Admissions Office is optional if: a) your high school reports class rank and you are in the top 10 percent, or b) your high school does not report class rank and you have a 3.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale. ** All other candidates for admission to the freshman class are required to take the Scholastic Assessment Test. SAT II tests are strongly recommended, especially in English composition with essay and mathematics.

Skidmore

Muhlenberg

*In the Spring of 1996, the Muhlenberg faculty and Board of Trustees voted to make the SAT and ACT an optional part of the admissions process on a five-year experimental basis. Students choosing not to submit the SAT or ACT are required instead to provide a graded paper with the teacher's grade and comments on it. Such students also are required to interview with a member of the Admission staff. Students wishing to be considered for non-need merit awards and/or honors programs at Muhlenberg must submit the results of the SAT or ACT testing. Additional details regarding Muhlenberg's optional standardized testing policy are available from the Office of Admission and are included in each application packet. *

I know I'm probably missing some.

I'm not from New York City. I'm Sorry if I insinuated that in any way.

Also, my ACT score is one aspect of my application; personally, I don't see how a school can just blatantly reject someone due to that one score. Everything else on my application is competitive and up to par with those competitive schools. Did you not look at my EC's? My Recs and Essay are solid. Ugh. I thought colleges look at an applicant holistically. Furhtermore, Bowdoin won't even see my ACT score, and nor will Middlebury. With respect to Northwestern, 57 percent of the freshmen class had scores lower than a 29.

I have two alumni recs at Yale, potentially one at Columbia, and I recently had an interview at Dartmouth.

I'm first generation and neither of my parents, nor my family, has gone to college.

As of right now, I'm looking to add either Dickinson or Skidmore - or both.
