Deferred from my "Safety School."

for joey sweets:

yeah, it was really interesting. our counselors were completely puzzled. her top choice was Columbia and she was accepted there. She was rejected at Dartmouth, NYU, and Tufts. Waitlisted at Duke and Cornell and Georgetown. Also rejected at her safety, which was Uni. of QWashington Honors College.

My Safety was also SUny Binghamton and I also got derred saying that They are waiting for my Mid Year reports; this really depressed me as well. I ED was for NYU and I got in but into their pseudo GSP program, that I declined to go to because its not what I intended to go for. So now I'm basically trying to maintain my Senior grades and thinking of adding another Suny for an actualy Safety. I had applied to SUNY Binghamton, Albany, Stony Brook, and Geneseo. But I think I will also slip in Buffalo as well. I would've applied to more private second tier colleges near NYU caliber but money is somewhat of an issue especially since I have plans for Grad school as well. BTW your stats are better than mine and I think i might as well tell GC about this; I was just hoping to wait it out until I get their final notice of acceptance or not but now This topic has given me lots of doubts -.-

I posted the new information. Bump.

Quick question....How do you find out if you are on the NHS? Is there a website?

pickled communism,

You said 59% of Northwestern freshmen got below 29?? No wonder you don't think your list is too top-heavy.

http://ugadm.northwestern.edu/commondata/2004-05/c.htm
68% got 30 and above.

Yeah, thanks for helping?

Well, I consulted this chart right off of Northwestern's Website:
http://www.ugadm.northwestern.edu/freshman/facts/

Also, it correlates with the class of 09'.

pickled communism,

I think that you are reading too much into on line of information onthe freshman facts and not seeing how it relates to the big picture. NU admitted a total of 4684 students.

Granted out of the 627 students that applied 14% (93 students were admitted),

but iif you also look at the overall pool of candidates
these 93 students represent (93/4684) 2% of the entire admitted class of 2009

These 627 students represents 14.58 % of the entire applicant pool of 4298 students that submitted ACT scores.

(4298/16221 = approx 26.5% of the total applicant pool submitted ACT scores)

a total of 1194 students who submitted ACT scores were admitted

93/1194 = 7.7 % OF those that were in the pool of applicants who had submitted ACT scores, had the scores that were between 27-28.

There were a total of 201 students admitted who had an ACT score of 28 or below. 201/1194 =16.83% of the admitted class of students that submitted ACT scores

and 4% of the entire admitted class (201/4684)

the net net is that NU is not a match for you more of a reach.

Hmm I didn't hear of many people rejected from SUNY with those stats..maybe talk to them on the phone or something. Yea, Rochester is def. a great school in NY (U Roch not RIT)

I second w1cked. You may want to check with them to see why exactly you were rejected. SUNY is a state school and I thought they have the obligation to give offers to those with best stats (since it's number driven). I don't think they can play the game of rejecting overqualifed applicants like the privates do. I read how some Californian applicants filed petitions and turned rejection into acceptance for UCs before.

Op was not rejected, he was deferred

simply can't believe it. I applied EA to a SUNY school and got deferred. They said they wanted to wait and see my midyear report.

"The admissions committee has reviewed your application and feels that we need additional information to help us in our decision-making process. We would like to review your mid-year grades. Your early action application will be deferred to regular admission and will be evaluated for a second time once grades are received."

I suggest that the OP have their GC call and find out what's up. Seems odd that that college would be waiting for mid-year grades from such a stellar student. I'm wondering if there was an adcom mistake. Public university adcoms have to speed through applications , usually basically checking just stats and whether the students took the required courses. I bet it's easy to make mistakes.

university of rochester is a private school btw, not a state school

Skidmore looks like a good choice. Small privatews will look at tou as a person more than your stats. Though don't be naive. All schools take your numbers very seriously. This is the US News era and every schools wants to keep it's numbers going up so they go up in the rankings. The average and below average scores belong to athletes, developments, legacies, URMs and other special interest groups.

I would seriously look at schools where everything is in the 75%. Do you have a college counselor? It's hard to believe they allowed your list. You now need to create a realistic one fast. Many Jan 1 schools will accept apps a few days late. Carolyn is great at that. Why don't you PM her along with working with Northstarmom. You'll have a great list in no time.

*** I cant believe they deferred you.
bing is friking retarded then

I hope you feel better cause you deserve it

My guidance counselor didn't do anything; she probably isn't going to call. Ugh. I think I'm gonna send in my application to Dickinson.

I Dickinson's application is due the first of February.

I agree that the deferral looks fishy - especially for the reason stated. It might be time for a parent to chat with the GC.

What school at Binghamton did you apply to? Typically, admission is more competitive to their School of Management than to the school of Liberal Arts (Harpur College)

Harpur College. I really don't know, guys.

Wow that must be suprising in a very disappointing way... I suggest applying for, like a previous poster said, an even safer safety school.
Don't lose all hope for your top choices though, you may have gotten deferred under very unusual circumstances, and may yet get accepted to good colleges.

"Quick question....How do you find out if you are on the NHS? Is there a website?"

NHS=National Honor Society. You have to apply, get info about it from your GC.
