Deferred from my top 2 choices...do I have a chance still?

This is basically asking for a miracle...but I want some opinions first:

I have been deffered from Maryland and VTech...so I have sent in my new transcript to Vtech, and tuesday I will for Maryland:

GPA: 3.17 Old - 3.24 New (i got 2Bs, rest As, took 3 APs + honors calc, in which I got a B, an improvement from the Ds I got in precalc and algebra 2).

WGPA 3.6 Old - 3.7 New (2As in AP Comp Sci and AP Physics, Bs in Calc and AP Lit, As in rest (electives))

SAT: 1890 (590 V, 670 M, 600 W), Remained the same.

ECs: Rugby, NYLF, I work 2 jobs, Computer Club.

Other; 10-11th Grade, I kept getting 2.85s, and now, senior year, with my biggest load yet, I have gotten 3.71s, if this means anything.

I would appreciate feedback, thanks.

I am bumping it

Sorry to be a pest, but I need help with Maryland:

It's time i spoke why my grades slipped in 10th-11th grade:

during that time period, I had lost my grandmother, a mentally-challanged cousin (who was very dear to us), and an uncle, all in a year.

Then came unempoyment. Due to job crisis, my dad (the sole income guy) lost his job. We spent the entirty of summer jumping from house to house (we lost our house on the day my brother finished 5th grade), dealing with this problem, dealing with that problem...

Of course, the problems never ended. Due to strict financial constrants, the parents would always, and I mean always, have soem sort of diagreement.

Now, unfortunately, being the oldest of three, I deal with this the most. So many bad things that happened to me in a span of 1 year, I completley lost hope for 3 months.

Now, I'm sure u all r thinking "Oh how sad. But that won't do u any good for Maryland.." or "Hahaha. Sucks for you!"

So is there anyway I can explain this to my schools, specifically Maryland? I never mentioned it, and I dont want to give them the impression that I didnt care for school (I mean, I got 3.5s in Freshman, and 3.71s Senior Years, both when nothing has gone wrong).

So what should I do? Just send in my transcripts and keep quiet? or what?

It should have been mentioned in your guidance counselor's recommendation letter, or in your essays. I suppose you can call maryland and ask them if they will still accept supplemental information based on the grades from your transcript. VTech is a reach, but I think Maryland is still do-able if you show them you really want to go there.

I like the feedback, just one thing:

How excatly does one "show" he/she wants to go to a particular colelge?

I mean, theres little I can do now, excpet maybe write something to them.

hm, I suppose you can send in an additional essay if they accept it, based more on specifics of Maryland and why you want to go there. Also, like I said, if they will accept additional info on your past situation, then you should do that as well. And if possible, call them ASAP so you can send in all these essays along with your midyear report (nice little package if you know what I mean). I hope you get in, what other colleges did you apply too?

hey man, thanks for your help.

Unfortuantly, I didnt apply to any other ones (which is a mistake), but seeing I got deffered, not rejected gives me a lil hope.

Basically I will write an essay explaining the circumstances. I sure hope the adcoms are that humane...

EDIT: Oh, and would another reccomendation thing help? I see ppl who got accepted send in two recoomendatiosn from teachers. I'm just curious... I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

Yes, if they accept additional recommendations, that will help as well. ALSO, make it explicit in one of your essays or additional info. remarcks that if you are admitted you will definitely enroll for umaryland (usually increases your chances). Yea, the fact that you didn't apply to other places was a mistake, but it's okay, don't worry you still are competitive, and furthermore just to give you more choices, there are still a lot of colleges with rolling admissions up to april (i.e rutgers), and/or colleges whose deadlines may have passed but still accept students based on an availability basis (i.e uconn).

xindianx gave you the best advice anyone could give you. if you tell them you will attend if accepted they will want you more because it increases their yield, which makes the school look more attractive to prospective applicants. But of course, you must be sincere.

Considering many ppl that do get accepted dont go there, it will look good if I promise them I will go.

Oh no, I will be sincere, If forced to choose between Vtech and Maryland, I will choose Maryland. Maryland has a challenging Comp Sci program, I have challenged myself in high school ,and if I get into Maryland, I will defiently enjoy the comp sci program (enjoy as in I will prob stick to it).

The only thing that worries me is:

Isnt RD competition at Maryland really brutal, considering most of the seats r now taken by the early birds?

On a side note, I really appreciate your guy's feedback, I'm a fairly new member, yet I see ppl giving me tons of good advice, considering I am no 3.9 GPA, 2100 SAT person...

I am bumping

This isnt meant to be a bump, but...

Is it true that your chances of getting accepted in RD is LOWER if you are deferred? Someone once told me that, but I was like "But the admissions ppl who look at RD never consider Deferrals as a de-grader"

bsBrowser.......apply to a couple backups with rolling admissions....wow 2 school= not enough if you were deferred, wait nevermind all the deadlines have passed.... i guess just be persistant w/ these two but be prepared to go to Comm Coll for a year and transfer....good luck w/ everything

oh no, if all fails I will go to a comm college and transfer. I just want to use every last opporunity I have, since Maryland IS my dream school...
