So I applied for early action at NC State back in October. I heard back from them in January saying I was deferred, and I just heard back from them again saying I’m once again deferred until July. I really don’t understand their admissions process, and it’s really disappointing because I’d planned to attend there with friends. I’ve been accepted into Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Appalachian State, and the University of Texas. But NC State does not seem to want me. Does anyone here have tips on getting in? I’m still set on going there. I even wrote all of the essays, which I didn’t actually do for the other schools I applied to, but I got in to all of them except State! If it helps, I’m white and I’ve been a permanent resident of North Carolina my whole life. I also intend to major in Computer Science.
Here’s my scores and such:
ACT: 31 (English: 34, Reading: 31, Math: 32, Science: 27)
Unweighted GPA: 3.97
Weighted GPA: 4.8
AP Classes(Exam score): AP World History (4), AP United States History (5), AP Computer Science (5), AP English Language (4), AP Physics (4), AP Statistics (4), AP Literature (Exam this year)
Class rank: 13 out of 286
I haven’t done any extracurriculars throughout high school, but mainly because my family cannot afford to pay for me to have car insurance or even a car. I explained this in my personal essay, but it seems like they don’t care or something. Is NC State really that competitive this year?
I was straight up denied from the CoE (General Engineering, ChemE intent) with a 4.5 GPA, 2080 SAT (740M/680CR/660W), 9 AP courses, and loads of extracirriculars (including 200+ hours of service and leadership positions in multiple clubs) which was pretty surprising. I guess switching to the Common App made admissions pretty competitive this year.
I know you wanted to go to NC State with your friends, but look at this as a way to grow. In my opinion, take one of the other acceptances and run. Figure out which one gives you the best financial aid and make your mark at that school.
Honestly OP, if you’ve gotten into those other schools, I would start making plans on attending one of those. You should definitely at least visit those other schools and give them some serious consideration because the other schools you’ve gotten into are just as good academically. I wouldn’t wait on State at all. I am applying as a transfer and apparently NC State has gotten a lot more competitive over the years. For instance, transferring into the engineering school as a Mechanical, Industrial, Aerospace and quite a few others have significantly increased their GPA requirements (min GPA ≥ 3.5, no exceptions) from years’ past. NC State used to be a pretty easy school to get into but that has apparently changed. But once again, I wouldn’t wait on State. Like Isp2015 said, try to get as much money from all of those schools as possible. With your stats, I am confident that you’re eligible for scholarships. As a high school student, take advantage of that OP.
That’s discouraging. You have a great resume.
You were accepted to Georgetown but not NC State? Doesn’t make sense with your application. Maybe they assume you’ll go somewhere else (like Georgetown). If it’s truly your first choice, let them know.
When I was deferred in January, I was told by admissions that there was a 25% increase in applications this year.
