Deferred From NC State

I was very surprised by their decision to defer my application as an in state student. My SAT was well over the average at around a 1930 and my unweighted/weighted gpa was around 3.7/4.8, because of the nine AP's i have taken throughout my high school career. I was wondering if anybody can tell me what my chances are to gain acceptance to NC State during regular decision.
EC
200+ hours of community service at my local hospital.
Varsity Tennis and letter. Undefeated Season.
President of the Ultimate Frisbee Club.
Vice President of a club at my school.
Spanish Club for 3 years.
National Honor Society.
etc.

same here. I had 10 AP’s taken with a 4.6 GPA…

I am very surprised you all did not get in. The one thing I will say is that I was told that 4 APs are more than enough, even 2-3. So NC State may not have looked at that too heavily?? I’d don’t know.

It is all totally random, I think. You have the stats, so maybe the school you applied to at NC State?? For instance, Engineering is competitive to enter. We were also told by our counselor to not apply to NC State schools in the same area (so, for instance, for me to do Biology but the second choice something very different).

What college/study did you all apply to within NC State?

Finally, some state schools are looking for geographic diversity. That could be it perhaps?

I would check with your college counselor and see what she(or he) says.
HSG

My major was in chemistry which I heard was not difficult to get into. I may give them a call to see where my weaknesses were.

popcorn and donewithh, your stats seem right-on. There are a few things that could contribute to a deferral. Where in NC are you, what counties? Also, are you white or asian? Did you do the essays? Did you have any grades on your transcript that would make them hesitate or think that you may have trouble in college? To me a deferral means that you qualify but they want to wait until they have a look at the regular application pool.

Hello I also got deferred from nc state. For my two majors I put first year college, and sciences undeclared. At the time when I submitted my application, I was not sure what I wanted to major in at NC State. I went to an open house and I was very interested in sports management and conservation of natural resources/ park and rec management. It was too late for me to change my intended major because I had already submitted my application.

I have a weighted 4.29 GPA
23 ACT
1510 SAT
3 AP classes
Honor classes
I’ve been apart of multiple clubs and sports teams such as:
NHS
Football
Baseball
Key club
Teen court
Honor role all 4 years of high school
I started a book drive where I collect books and give them to needy children in the community as a community service project my sophomore year and continued that junior and senior year

I guess I am really scared because NC State is my number one college I would like to attend. Does anyone know the acceptance rate if you get deferred? Also, is it worth calling the admissions office and telling them about my interest in sports management and park and rec management/ conservation of natural resources? I would love to attend the first year college for a year and then transfer into one of those majors. Should I stick with first year college as my first choice major or should I change it to the other ones I listed above?
Thank you so much for your response!

You might try and bring your test score(s) up (either one) and resubmit those before the regular decision … or if that is past, then call Admissions and ask if that would help. Also, if you didn’t submit an essay, then do that as well. You can explain why NC State is your school of choice, etc…. it can’t hurt.

Well, first of all i am of Asian descent. I also did the personal statement… but without much editing since I took more time polishing up my application for UNC Chapel Hill. I also got a couple of B’s Junior year with a downward trend from the previous 2 years because of Calculus: i was the only 3 juniors from my class to take Calculus. But I hope to demonstrate to admissions that my grades have improved with the 4 A’s i have all semester in my 4 AP classes im taking.
Right now, I have 4 foreign language courses, 6 math courses, 4 science coures, etc.

Coleman4,
I submitted a personal statement. In it I talked about how I struggle with standedized tests and how I don’t believe they accurately reflect students potential if their school grades show otherwise. Do you think I have the credentials to get accepted into the first year college after being deferred?

HAHAHAHAHAHA. I just found out what was wrong with my application. All of my gpa, sat,ec,etc were not the problem but the personal statement that i sent. I accidentally saved my final pdf during early action onto my rough draft. So, I basically sent them my rough draft of my essay, so they never got my final one. It was pretty reckless for me as an applicant, but I just sent them an email about it. They though I had sent them a joke for an essay but it was not even my essay. I feel much better about it and I feel a whole lot better about being accepted during regular decision. Ill update my status.
MORAL OF THE STORY. READ THE PERSONAL STATEMENT AGAIN TO MAKE SURE YOU DONT SENT THE WRONG ONE!!

popcorn95 sorry about the mistake on the personal statement but I’m sure that kind of thing happens every year. Glad you figured it out and will have a chance to do something about it. Packfan101, I agree with coleman4 in that you should do what you can because at this point it will only help (as long as you don’t make a pain of yourself). When I applied to college 30 years ago (yelp), my number one choice was University of Rochester but I was waitlisted. My older brother was a sophomore there at the time. My parents had the money to pay my tuition so he visited the admissions office and told them that if they accepted me that I would not need financial aid. I got my acceptance letter a few days later. I could never do that for my kids these days, way too expensive, but it does go to show that contacting admissions after decision can have an impact.

I honestly feel bad pointing this out, but the reason I mentioned bringing up your test scores is that they currently fall below the 50% range of freshman accepted (last year but probably not much different this year). Unfortunately, especially with the larger universities, they do look at the numbers. It might not drive the entire decision, but I believe it’s a major part of it. Once you get past the numbers (I suspect) is when they look at the ECs and essays, etc. to see how you stand apart from others with similar GPA, test scores. The good news is that you were deferred, not denied, despite being below the 50% on the test scores… which means you have an opportunity to bring that up. See if you can take the ACT or SAT once more (January?) - Call Admissions and ask if that is possible- or better yet, just ask them what you can do to get a stronger consideration.

I posted this on another thread, but just to give you a general idea:
Fall 2013 (Mid 50% range):

 • Weighted GPA: 4.22 - 4.67
 • Unweighted GPA: 3.50- 3.88
 • ACT: 26 - 30 (composite)
 • SAT: 1180 - 1310 (CR + MA only)
 • SAT: 1730 - 1920 (CR + MA + Writing)

You can check out the Freshman Profile for last year and compare:

Hi. My son was also deferred. We didn’t realize that only the first choice was given consideration at this time. At least that is how it seems. He applied engineering and we knew it was a reach, but thought that he would be considered for his second choice, FYC, and be admitted. But wanted to chance Engineering. Is my thinking correct?

My son’s unweighted GPA is 3.48—I think that is what hurt. Weighted is 4.6.
7 APs (will be 10 by graduation).
ACT 30
He did the essays and personal statement. Great ECs including a governor’s award and Eagle Scout. Quality time (years devoted) to ECs instead of quantity.
One ‘C’ on high school report card….in BC Calc.

Did not taking Physics hurt?

He plans on calling the admissions office….from what some are saying that is a good idea?

Chances for FYC in March? Thoughts? Thanks so much for any input.

(Disclaimer) I am not an expert on this- I have 1 freshman in an out of state university and daughter just got accepted to NC State (Engineering). I’m not aware that they only considered the first choice - not saying that did not occur- I just don’t know. That’s interesting though because if that is the case, why even list a 2nd option.

That said, I am surprised by your son’s deferral as well as a few others I’ve seen on this forum. His GPA and ACT are both on the high of that 50% profile I copied below from the NCSU website. I don’t think the lack of Physics hurt as my daughter hasn’t had it yet either. She is scheduled to take it this year- next semester.

Your son should call Admissions though - it can’t hurt and might even show his interest more.

There is an interesting FAQ on Deferrals linked to the NCSU website:
[What does “Deferred for Final Review” mean?](http://ncstateundergradadmissions.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1947)

There are several Q & A’s on there about deferrals (what does it mean? what’s next? what can I do? etc.), but one that sounded promising is the % accepted after deferral (copied below). Check out the link- and it might help on how to proceed as well.

How likely is it that I will be accepted during Final Review?
We can’t tell you how many applications will be accepted during Final Review this year or how likely it is that you will be accepted. It will depend on your academic credentials and the credentials of other applicants who submitted an application by the January 15th final application deadline. Last year we were able to offer admission to 35 percent of students whose decisions were deferred until Final Review.

Asian - In State. I had a 26 ACT, 10 AP’s, 3.4 UW, 4.52 W. I got deferred. Very strong extracurriculars. I didnt do the personal statement. I guess I deserve it…

3 C’s, 2 B’s, 7 A’s Junior year (only C’s throughout high school)
However, I took 12 classes that year (8 AP’s/4 Honors)

Hey I’m also in the unlucky group of the deferred students to state. I thought I was a solid candidate too. I have a 4.46 gpa and 3.46 uw 1800 Sat 1250 cr + math
I have 7 APs 7 sciences and I have taken math through calc bc
I filled out the personal statement

I did apply to engineering though i hope I have a good chance still for state because I know of a lot of people that have been deferred

My daughter also got deferred. Her 1st choice was microbiology and 2nd choice was biological sciences, both in the College of Sciences. Her gpa is 4.5 (W) and 3.7 (U), 10% in her class, mission trips with youth at church, leadership conferences, swim team - varsity lettered, cheerleader, school clubs, volunteer work in the community, etc. However her SAT was only 1420. She called and spoke to an admissions counc. and was told everything was great on her application but she just needed to get her math SAT up by atleast 100 pts and her Reading SAT up by atleast 100 points. We also were told that they do not look at 2nd choices until the final decisions in March. And they let her change her 2nd choice to First Year College. My daughter did write the essays when she sent her application in. Does anyone think she will be okay if she gets her SAT scores up to what they wanted? Also, we asked if she took the SAT in January and the ACT in February, would they have the scores in time for final decisions. We were told the SAT scores would get there in plenty of time and they thought the ACT should but didn’t know about it for sure. My daughter also applied to UNC and is afraid if NCSU deferred her then UNC wouldn’t accept her. However, UNC does the holistic approach to their admissions process and a really good essay could overpower a bad SAT score. Does anyone know anything about this? Thank you!

I applied for early admission to NC State and received a deferral letter. I am a in-state, white male. My weighted GPA is a 4.52 and my unweighted is a 3.72. Class rank = 14 out of 220. My SAT scores are not very strong, although I plan to retake the test soon in January. 1630 (total) 520- reading, 590- math, 520- writing. I listed my first major as “Engineering- undecided” and my second as “Finance”. I recently had my second major changed to textiles because it is less selective. I have tons of EC and also a very strong personal statement.

I am wondering if anyone with similar credentials had the same, or a different admissions decision?

Also if anyone has any tips on ways to stand out to admissions please share them!

ddreneet,

NC State also views applications holistically. Though there isn’t an essay portion, there are other aspects of the application that could overrule a bad SAT score.

I can’t comment on anyone else’s application decisions except that I wish you all luck in the second round of admissions.

My son was deferred from NC State and accepted to Georgia Tech. His major is Aerospace Engineering. I was surprised, I thought Tech was more competitive.
