Deferred from Northeastern. What are my chances for regular decision. Will chance back.

Hey guys. I applied to Northeastern early action and today I found out I was deferred from Northeastern. Its not my top choice, but I thought I would get in with early action. My stats and such are as follows

Sat Score 2100
ACT Score 33
Sat Subject Tests: US History (690) Literature (720)
Weighted GPA: 3.82.
^The average accepted from my school is 3.87, but the only reason mine is lower is because of a poor freshman year. I got a 4.00 sophomore year followed by somewhere between 4.47 for junior year, and I had all A-s and As for the first quarter of this year.
I have taken 4 AP classes because you can’t start taking APs at my school until junior year.
AP Lang and Comp (5)
APUSH (4)
My senior year schedule includes AP Statistics, AP Literature, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, Honors Economics, and Calculus
ECs:
Piano for 10 years
Summer Internship with real estate company.
Summer Internship with property development company.
Summer Internship with a restaurant group.
Summer Job as commercial painter
XC 4 years
Track and Field 4 years
Volunteer work with drug addicts in the city
Indoor Track and Field 1 year
Volunteer work with retired racehorses
Rewards:
History award and Spanish award

Is this year really hard to get into Northeastern or something because on my naviance school graph I am completely surrounded by people that got accepted early action, or am I just overconfident.

Wow - those are great stats. I’m not sure what to tell you. My D just got deferred too and her stats are not as great as yours but she was expecting to get in and northeastern is one of her top colleges. Basically from what I can gather Northeastern lets in very few applicants through early action and their accepted early action pool has higher stats than the regular decision applications. That said, I would think your stats are good enough for an early acceptance. sorry - my D feels your pain - me too!

Exact same situation…
SAT 2120
GPA UW 3.77
Decent Extracurriculars
I got deferred and I dunno if acceptance is getting harder or if I’m just overestimating myself…
Any comments?

I was deferred too (2190 SAT + 4.46 W GPA). =( Good luck in the RD round!

Yeah my friend with very similar stats to myself who is also captain of two sports also got deferred. Good luck guys!

Also my friend who’s dad is literally the chair of a department there and who has solid stats got rejected. I think this might just be a really rough year.

I was also deferred- 4.1 GPA, 2110 (one sitting), three subject tests, good essay, great ECs… what’s happening

Deferred.
3.8765 Unweighted
4.6316 Weighted
31 ACT
Took two AP classes last year
AP Lang-4
APUSH-4
Senior Year Classes
AP Lit
AP Spanish Lang
Acc. Chinese
AP Gov
AP Bio
AP Calc
Have taken two languages (Spanish and Chinese) all four years, also speak another language at home
I’m assuming my rec letters were good; maybe not outstanding but certainly not bad although I never read them
ECS-varsity soccer, NHS, Research program run by my high school, National Spanish and Chinese Honor Society
Awards in language and social science
Essay: good
I definitely didn’t expect to get deferred and am pretty confused as to why…any comments? The only thing I can think of is my ACT but would that really carry so much weight in accordance with everything else? Maybe my recs were bad but I really trusted the teachers who wrote them and honestly can’t see them writing negative things about me
Any comments greatly appreciated

Jeez-DS applied early but not EA or ED so wont hear for a while. Northeastern is his back up but seeing the stats above, he’s headed for a deferral…and most deferrals become rejects. Darn. Going to have to get him to look at some other options. Really surprised by those stats being deferred. Ugh. Sorry for you all who have to wait it out another four months.

My son was deferred from NE yesterday too. I did read a post that said that 3000 people who were deferred last year were admitted RD. Hopefully was a legit statistic. Fingers crossed for all of you.

This was a top school of my daughters and had they said yes she probably would have attended. She also likes BU a lot and after this deferral she is thinking she might apply ED2 to Boston University. It’s such a difficult decision because she really likes the coop program that northeastern has.

@asil65 3000? I have a little hope now. Do you think the adcom will know someone has been deferred?

@kaatherinee - I wish I knew the answer to your question. I wonder if they grade the deferral pool somehow so they don’t have to go through the entire list again? Sure would be nice if everyone knew where the stack up and if they are at the bottom of the list focus on other schools. The stats of the accepted people from the EA list are like ivy league stats. I am sure many of those people have many options for colleges. Will be interesting to see how things pan out.

do you know when the decisions come out for deferred students?

Is anyone here able to let me know if you were eventually admitted into northeastern via regular decision after being deferred through EA? I am in the same boat (but a year later). I have a 2130 SAT, 3.94 UW, 4.11 W, and heavy EC’s. Did you end up sending any additional information to the school that would help your application during the second review?

I think more people are applying every year and each school is becoming more elite. However, I expect you’ll be able to get in after the RD pool

This makes me feel a bit better for my kid…he was deferred and - honestly – this was one of his safeties…his older sibling had gotten in 2 years ago (she went elsewhere) with a $20,000 merit-per-year award.

I will say that I saw a wide range of admits…from kids with much lower stats than mine getting in…and ones higher than him getting deferred. The odd thing about the holistic approach at Northeastern is that they don’t give you much of a chance to show anything outside of the common app itself.

Northeastern defers a good deal in EA, but unlike other schools, it is not meant to be a “soft rejection”. Part of the reason Naviance data can be inaccurate is because of NEU’s increasing selectivity. Most people who got in during 2006 would not get in now. So, 10 year old Naviance data isn’t really helpful. Once they see the full applicant pool in RD, then they accept many of the EA applicants, many of which have very strong stats. So, while you should temper your expectations, certainly do not give up hope.

@grandscheme There is no defer option for RD, so you will get a decision one way or the other if you applied RD.

@saules as well in particular. I certainly feel for your situation, as that is a tough one.

Good luck everyone!

These are the stats for enrolled 2016 freshmen at Northeastern. It is somewhat buried on their admissions website.
