Deferred from Notre Dame - 2021

So yeah, we’ve got to wait until April to hear again. Anyone have any tips for deferred kids? I can’t wait until April.

yooo deferred people!! :-c

When do rd decisions come out though?

can someone share what it means to be deferred? like the message they give?

"After careful consideration of your Restrictive Early Action application for admission to Notre Dame, the Committee on Admissions has elected to defer a decision on your application. I apologize for this delay, but trust you understand that we are committed to giving you, as well as every other applicant, our fullest and fairest consideration. In March, we will again review your application and evaluate your academic and personal accomplishments within the context of our larger Regular Decision application pool. Following our committee evaluation, we will notify you at the end of March of our decision—whether you have been admitted, denied admission, or offered a place on our waiting list.

This year we anticipate receiving more than 20,000 applications for our 2,040 first year class openings. If you have not yet done so, it would be prudent to pursue admission to other colleges and universities. Although your credentials are exemplary, I simply cannot predict the outcome of our committee meetings.

In the coming months, we encourage you to update your application by sending mid-year grades, additional test scores, or reports of your most recent achievements. During our admissions committee meetings in March, any supplemental information you have submitted will be reviewed and could influence our decision.

Most of all, we want to thank you for your sincere interest in the University of Notre Dame. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue the formidable task of selecting our first year class.

Sincerely,
Robert M. Mundy
Director of Admissions"

I have not seen ND release any specific data on how deferreds fare in the regular decision round.

Last year, there were 5321 early apps. 1610 accepts; 818 deferreds; 2882 denies. And ND says that its acceptance criteria at the REA stage are tougher/more conservative than at the RD stage.

So it seems like getting deferred at the early stage could be kind of glass half full. Since to get deferred, you were an above average applicant in a pool that is tougher than the regular round pool.

Seems like a good number of deferreds eventually get in. So getting deferred at ND is not like getting wait-listed at a school where only a tiny fraction of kids ever get off the wait list.

hey pals!! yes like poster above, if anyone somehow found stats about how many deferred kids get in, i would love to see! just honored to be here with all of you smart kiddos

This year, there were 6020 REA apps, 1470 were admitted and 893 were deferred!

Quick math says they are being more selective and will deferred enough to fulfill their admission wants, with expectation of 10% not attending. The defer will go into the RD pool and it will be the same protocol, but instead of deferred you will be on the wait list.

Does the math make since?

To anyone deferred, do not lose faith. My son was deferred, then accepted ND2020. In my opinion, if one is deferred, the admissions committee needs to better compare candidates in a given location. Being deferred can mean a candidate is qualified for admission, but it depends on the other local candidates.

So, what do you do, if deferred? You have already shown your likelihood of attending ND, by forgoing early admission elsewhere. Now, you must, yes, must, reiterate your interest by contacting your local Notre Dame admissions counselor. It might be best to wait until after the new year for this. Gather your thoughts and compose a compelling letter (email), and note any new accomplishments since your REA application.

Also, for peace of mind, be sure to apply elsewhere, say a state school, or another college you could see yourself attending. Having an acceptance, come February, will be soothing. Also, when financials enter the decision in April, you will have comparisons, and options.

Last spring, regular admission decisions came out at 6:42 on March 18. If you don’t know why this time is important, and you wish to attend Notre Dame, then you have some research to do. They will not release decisions on Saint Patrick’s Day.

@delbrton1 @plaidpants5 @goblue8721 Here is a blog posted yesterday on the ND Admissions site. Keep the faith and stay in touch with them.

Congrats to everyone who was deferred, this alone shows that you have accomplished impressive feats so far in you High School career. I was deferred EA last year and admitted RD in Spring, if anyone wants to message me I would be happy to answer any specific questions, read letters and offer advice on how to strengthen your application further. Best of luck to all of you and Go Irish!

@GoIrish317 what are some ways to convey to ND that it is our top choice school/ are there any ways to increase our chances in regular decision?

S received an odd email today from Notre Dame saying “thank you for submitting your application for RD” – he was deferred in Early Action. Did anyone else get this?

@CollegeParent123 My DS did too. I think they are just making it official that they are in the RD round.

My deferred peeps haha wassup!!! I got deferred but my act just went up to a 34 plus I’m a legacy so I am hopeful! Best of luck everyone

So I was accepted into and attended Notre Dames Summer Leadership Seminars last summer, but was deferred early. Do you think that program will help my chances? (ND flew us out, we earned a credit, etc)

To anyone who didn’t get this its because 6:42 is 842 military time, the last 3 numbers in the year ND was founded. I know that and still got waitlisted lmao
