Deferred from Ohio State

Hello all. I was recently deferred from Ohio State and I wonder what my chances still are of getting in. I have a 3.9 weighted GPA (3.6 unweighted). Top 25% in my class. 29 on my ACT. I play varsity lacrosse, am a member of NHS, work as a math tutor, take piano lessons, and various other things. I also have very rigorous class work. I’ve taken 8 APS and around 8 honors classes. I guess I just want to have a gauge of my chances to prepare for the worst. Thanks.

I’m also trying to major in astrophysics at the school of arts and sciences if that helps.

Holy shit. OSU must be pretty strict on admissions now if you got deferred…
Id think youll get in though, you have a solid record for a solid school. Good luck!

Show interest and go on visits/ send emails etc. That seems to be pretty important on the admission process this year.

@soyunchico The Admissons website lists 10 criteria for “holistic” review of prospective freshman applicants and “interest” is NOT listed as a criteria. Also, the Common Data Set for Ohio State explicitly says the school does NOT consider interest of an applicant. Personally I don’t think showing interest matters to them. How do you know that interest is considered? If indeed interest is now becoming a factor in admissions, then Ohio state should add “interest” as one of the criteria under the list of holistic factors it says it considers for admissions, and it should revise the common dataset to reflect that.

@trackmbe3 I mean I have no proof but there definitely is an awkward trend in admissions right now. It seems like showing interest couldn’t hurt tho. My essay wasnt great and my ECs were average but I got in with average scores. I know a girl with a 24 act who got in and is third generation. Sorry if that made you mad I’m just saying there is something weird going on.

@Haise222 OSU seems to care very much about their yield rate this year (percentage of accepted students) which effects their ranking. If you are seriously interested in OSU, I would suggest immediately writing to your admissions counselor and letting him/her know that OSU is your first choice.

I have the exact same ACT and GPA Unweighted. I took/am taking 1 Ap 6 honors and 4 College credit plus courses… I had 3 jobs throughout high school, and was in 3 clubs. I am also trying to major in Astrophysics and Astronomy. I was deferred as well. I was really disappointed when I found out, and the waiting until March is killing me.

You will get in during regular admission. Are you in state, and, if so, what part of Ohio you live in? Ohio State strives for diversity across the state and monitor their numbers carefully during early admission process. But it’s a big school, and then have many more spots left for regular decision. Good luck to you, and let us know how it goes. Go Bucks!!

How could you possibly know that? Do you work for the college?

The best deferred students can do is let their admissions rep know they’re still interested and hope for the best. They should also make sure they have a safety on their list, just in case.

If you have updated scores or great midterm grades, I would send them in.

OSU is really funny about where you fall in your class rank. They seem to prefer people who fall in the top 10-15%, so that could have been a reason you were deferred. Just continue to do well in your classes and send in an updated transcript from your fall semester of your senior year if you can.

Are you in state? You’re more likely to get in if you are. Ohio State is becoming more and more competitive each year, but I think you still have a chance. Keep your hopes up, but not too high!

I have to say it must be weird. My son got out right declined in November. We just a call on friday saying they had made a change in status for him and he got accepted. He is above average but not stellar. We have not gotten anything in writing though. No email or mail

@mainlinemom who did you call to find out you had been accepted?

@Msimms2017 The called my cell phone. This was almost a week ago and have not heard anything from them. It was so weird. My son was supposed to get an email and so was I. We never heard anything.
