General Comments: Pretty upset I didn't get in, but can't say I didn't see it coming. I really doubt I'm going to pursue pitt. After talking to an admissions counselor and another woman who works for pitt they don't think it would be in my best interest to get into an easier school and then transfer - to risky. I was accepted into Duquesne's nursing program and I'm going to start there, maybe I will pursue the transfer after I'm at Duquesne.

All of your ECs seem well rounded, the only reason I may see why you were deferred may have been due to the SAT/ACT scores. From what I’ve heard, Duquesne has a great Nursing program, and I would still keep the idea of transferring in the back of your mind too.

That’s exactly what the admissions people said. If my SAT/ACT’s were higher I would have been a good candidate. I am going to keep it in the back of my mind. We’ll see how I like Duquesne though.

If you really want to go to Pitt, you could try studying to increase your ACT or SAT score. There’s lot of great info on how to go about doing that on those boards. My daughter and I put together a self study plan for her and it really helped based on info we found here. She took the ACT without any prep and got a 30. She took it again without any prep and got a 31. She then put in a total of 17 hours of prep (we know cause she tracked her total practice time), mainly on reading section as it was by far her lowest section and some time into English and Math as well, and got a 33, and a 34 with superscoring. The biggest thing for her was the timing on the reading. Her goal was a 33 and she was thrilled to meet it, as it is a minimum for possible scholarships at several of her college choices. We followed advice on the ACT boards on CC, which said to start practicing a section without timing it, and be sure to review your wrong answers. After you start getting more correct that way, then start timing. The key to the practice is to thoroughly understand why you are getting the wrong answers for each and every wrong answer. She really needed push herself hard through the reading sections (she said she felt like she was “zooming”) to get through them as she’s naturally a slower reader. You seem like a very strong candidate - perhaps that’s all it would take - maybe work on your two lowest sections and re-take? Duquesne seems like a great opportunity and offers the same great location. Just a suggestion and good luck - your stats indicate you will succeed wherever you go! I wouldn’t suggest just retaking without prep though cause it usually doesn’t help most people, again according to the ACT prep boards on CC.

Pitt’s middle 50% CR+M SAT for students offered admission in 2011 was 1200-1420 while the range for deposited students was 1170-1390. ACT was 26-31 for admissions offers and 25-31 for deposited students.

Your 1080 SAT and 25 ACT is in the bottom 25% of admissions offers. Keep in mind the Nursing school may be even more competitive. You absolutely should take your SATs and/or ACTs again if you want to better your chances of getting in Pitt’s main campus.

However, you should be aware that Pitt’s School of Nursing also started a [nursing program at the Pitt-Johnstown campus](http://www.upj.pitt.edu/27361/). As far as I know, it is the same program and results in the same diploma. If things don’t work out for Pitt-main, it could be a Pitt alternative.

Some Pitt School of Nursing stats/information for the class of 2009. Supposedly it is more difficult to gain admittance now then it was in 2009.

If Pitt is your number one choice, set up an interview if at all possible! That’s what I did and got my acceptance letter 10 days afterwards. Show Pitt that you love Pitt

How were you able to get an interview?

I’ve been in contact with a man who is in charge of admission to regional campuses and he was telling me that I can reapply and be reconsidered if I take my ACT’s again. I think that I’m going to try to do this in hopes to get the score way up. Any suggestions on what I can do for test prep?
