If you got deferred from SMU what are your chances of getting in? What GPA are they looking for and when do you think people would hear?

macguy: I don’t know the direct answer to your question but as I have read up on the college admissions process I have read that deferred students can be a bit proactive. You might write your admissions counselor reiterating how much you want to attend SMU, send mid-year reports showing your continued academic strengths and midterm grades. One reference (I think it was What HIgh Schools dont Tell You) suggests that you have one of your references write another strong letter or maybe a different reference. I think the folks at SMU are the NICEST. Call your admissions person, talk to your preferred dept. head, ASK THEM! And good luck!

My son just pointed out that you might also note which schools have accepted you when you talk with SMU folks…

macguy- I looked up last year’s stats on the SMU website, on a nationally-standardized form called the Common Data Set. The easiest way to find it yourself is to just type “SMU Common Data Sets” into your Google search, and it pops right up.

Last year, 8356 applied (as first-year undergrads), 4467 were offered admission (53%), and 1329 enrolled (30% of those admitted, and 16% of those who applied).

Of the 3889 who were not offered admission, 735 (19%) were offered a place on the waiting list, and 343 accepted that status. Eventually, 183 (25% of the 735) moved off the waiting list and enrolled. So, macguy, assuming you are one who was offered a spot on the waiting list, you stand a 25% chance of getting in; but this does use last year’s stats.

Also, you use the word “deferred”, and that term is not used on the Common Data Set. That may be a separate category not accounted for on the CDS, but I don’t know.

i guess the correct term is waitlisted. Not sure if i will hear soon or not.
anyone out there on the waitlist

I am and its so stressful. As of right now the only other schools I’ve heard back from are CU Boulder and Northeastern, but I was accepted into both. I’ve been asking questions about what to do if your on the waitlist and I’ve been getting a lot of stay in contact with SMU and write your admissions counselor- basically show your continued interest. This is kind of random, but does anyone know if SMU offers need based financial aid to students admitted after being waitlisted (crossing my fingers that I might be accepted)? I’m just curious…

I found out today that I was waitlisted and I had been deferred.

Has anyone been accepted from off of the waitlist, yet?

At most schools, you won’t know if you’ve been accepted off the wait list until after the first deposit due date. Otherwise, how would they know how many people they can accept?

I don’t understand that either, but SMU reassured waitlisted candidates that they would be notified of admission before the first deposit.

has anyone heard from smu yet? they said we would know no later than april 15 and it’s almost that time. :/

Yes, I was wait listed, but I got an email asking me to call- I’m in! Just need to wait for the financial packet. Good luck!

Waitlisted at SMU too; letter said the same (mid-April). Maxxx, when did you get the email?

Aw, good luck you guys!! I really hope you get in. I’ll be checkin in here to see how you’re doing. And keeping my fingers crossed for ya.

Boomer- mid-last week.

i haven’t been emailed : / will they just not tell us if we haven’t been accepted? that’s extremely unfortunate. is anyone else in the same position? i’m currently in moscow so it’s hard to check up on these things.

@ teddy- yesterday I received a letter in the mail in which the dean of admissions stated the current status of my application. He also mentioned that the admissions committee has not utilized the waiting list as of yet, but should space become available would gladly acknowledge my intent in being admitted and would try at best to keep me informed should a space become available. I personally believe the admissions committee will not be able to feed into the waiting list until after May 1st but thats just my opinion. Hope this helped! Best wishes.

okay, that actually makes me feel better. i was wondering how smu planned to tap their waitlist so early? thanks doll <3

maxxx, thanks & congrats! ponyup & teddy: got the same update letter yesterday…more waiting :(

What school/major did y’all apply for?
