Does Anyone have any insights into kids who were deferred from ED? When do the deferred kids hear? Are their chances higher/lower than regular applicants? My son was deferred and Syracuse remains his #1 choice. Any advice??!
That’s my question as well
I have no knowledge of how the school looks at it, and I doubt anyone else here does, unless an SU admission counselor posts.
However, my theory is that the school can take only so many people ED, because they have to leave room for RD applicants. By deferring a student, they are going to evaluate them with the RD students. I’d say your chances of admission are better than average because you’ve “passed the first round,” so to speak, but there is no guarantee. Still, if you were not a competitive applicant, I think they would have just denied.
Other theories, also not based on anything: The program really wants you but the University isn’t sure, so this gives them more time to decide. Or the reverse, the university wants you but your first choice College doesn’t, so they need time to find an alternate College. Remember. That if they offer you ED but not your first choice major, you can decline admission, so there is no advantage to the school in taking away an ED spot for that.
So while perhaps there was no advantage for you to apply ED, at this stage your chances should be better than the statistical average of the RD pool as a whole.
But who really knows? Those people aren’t talking.
Last year my son applied early decision to Syracuse and was deferred. He ended up waiting until the summer and never really received a straight answer . The last email he received was around June or July stating that it could be possible that space might open up for fall and that they would give him an answer in August . At this point we had already given up and accepted a spot at another school which he is very happy at. The process was ridiculous we felt like they were just stringing him along . I feel it should be a yes or no not a maybe. I hope to the students that are currently deferred that this is not the case but this is what happened to my son .
