I recently got deferred from Tulane, which was a huge disappointment and came as a surprise.
I was wondering if I even have a chance of getting in as a deferred student, as well as if there is anyway that I can improve my chances. Also, I saw my ACT was above their middle 50% range for admitted students, so what is "weak" on my resume that could cause a deferral? Here are my stats:
33 on my ACT
8/302 in my class (this will probably go up this semester)
4.3 weighted GPA
3.8 unweighted GPA
taking the hardest schedule possible, including 6 science classes over four years (all my school offers)
secretary of spanish club
vice chair of a youth philanthropy group that I helped found.
raised $8,000 for said philanthropy group
student council for 4 years
tennis for 3 years
basketball for 2 years
key club for 2 years
Leadership academy for 2 years
Illinois state scholar
National merit qualifier (207 on the PSAT)
co founded a book club at my school
went to summer college at a state university. took journalism classes. 4.0 GPA
Great letters of recommendation
Good essays

Essays and Recs.

They might have just had a really good year, applicant wise, and just want more time to think about it (if you are good, but not the best). Your numbers look like you should get in regular, though. It’s not like being deferred hurts your chances in the regular applicant pool. They might just not know your HS well, and don’t want to give away and early spot. conversely your demography might be over represented and the want diversity in the early applicant pool.

So just keep doing what you are doing. Revise your essays for the next set of schools. Make sure you have safety schools.

Did you apply EA or SCEA? Is Tulane your first choice? Did you submit the “Why Tulane” essay?

My D was admitted, but applied SCEA and made it quite clear that Tulane was her #1. She was also recruited for the orchestra. But if Tulane truly is your first choice, I recommend you contact your admissions counselor to let him/her know and submit any supplemental materials you can to help your chances for RD.

There are a couple of other threads for Tulane Class of 2016 - you may want to check for more ideas there. I will tell you that my daughter applied well before the 11/15 cutoff and I have seen many other kids who applied later with higher stats reporting that they were rejected or deferred. Good luck to you!

Many high-achieving students came on CC baffled with their deferral from Tulane this month. The general consensus is that you didn’t show enough interest in Tulane- one way or another, they figured you weren’t truly interested and did not want to hurt their yield.

The first thing I wonder about is whether you were asking for financial aid. Tulane is a school I think of as being sensitive to this issue.

I honestly cannot believe after reading that that you got deferred from Tulane. You seem to be top 20 material, if not a reach at the ivies.

Wow, just wow. Tulane has been known to defer students with excellent credentials like you, mainly because it looks excellent on the admissions records. They might have also gotten the feeling that you would only consider Tulane a safety, given your excellent app, and therefore didn’t want to waste a spot on a student who is more likely to attend an even more prestigious school then them. I’d suggest showing them that you are truly interested. Maybe email your Tulane admissions rep and let him know that you got deferred and attach a ‘why Tulane’ essay. You definitely have good chances at even more prestigious school, even at some ivies.

My son was deferred as well - he applied EA, not SCEA, and we are not asking for any money. 3.6 wtd GPA; 580, 600 and 670 SATs; lots of service work; good recs.

It was not a safety schol for hm by any means - other choices are Penn State. BC and IU.

He’s visiting there shortly. Will that do the trick to push him over the line?
