Deferred from UCF 10/17/19

I was deferred from UCF today after submitting my application via common app on 9/15 and my transcripts received 2 weeks ago. I am very upset because ucf was my dream school. I had a 4.17 weighted gpa and a pretty low SAT score of 1120. I wrote a very strong essay to help with my score and participated in a good amount of EC activities related to my selected major. I called UCF Admissions office right after I received the news today and was told I was deferred from every term. I would really appreciate any advice or insight on what I could do during this situation.

The main thing you can do is get good grades this semester and send an updated transcript to UCF.

Do you have time to retake the SAT? Class of 2023’s average was 1330, so UCF was probably a low reach/reach for you, depending on your selected major.

Lastly, make sure to apply to other schools and make sure at least one is an affordable safety.

Good luck.

@Mwfan1921 Thank you for the advice, I’ve been working hard in the case of this situation and achieved straight As for the first quarter. Hopefully the same for second quarter (1st and second quarter make up the semester). I’m going to really focus on my math score for the SAT, that is what is holding me back.

Thank you

It sounds like you are on the right track. You might want to consider sending what is called a “Letter of Continued Interest”. Usually those are sent when one is waitlisted, but it can’t hurt to reiterate your interest, why you are a good match for the school, explain you have improved your grades, and - only if it is true - tell them you will definitely attend if you are accepted there.

Good luck to you!!

@Groundwork2022 Thank you! Believe it or not but I already started my letter of continued interest today after the bad news. I will definitely use the info you gave me to help piece it together:) thanks again

Have you tried ACT? It’s probably the last thing you want to hear (more testing) but my kids did significantly better on the ACT than the SAT. Of course everyone is different, but if you haven’t tried it, you could even just take a dedicated look at a practice test to see if taking an official one might be worth your time. If not, no harm in sticking with SAT.

It sounds like you are a hard worker and I wish you the best!
