Today, I just got deferred from UCF. I have been the captain of the varsity volleyball team for 3 years, I am in NHS and have about a 4.2 GPA. My test scores were low ( ACT 24) but I am in all AP's, 1 IB, and 1 Honors class. I have taken 3 other AP classes as well.

I am extremely upset, even though I did not even want to attend UCF that badly, it was my "safety" school.

This is the message i received, "Your application has undergone an initial review and is currently deferred for further evaluation with the Admissions Committee."

That’s REALLY weird. UCF should be a safety. I also doubt that this is a case of Tuft’s syndrome b/c UCF seems to really want good students to apply…

i e-mailed the admissions office to make sure everything was as it should be, meaning all my papers in etc. I should be getting an email back soon hopefully.

and thank you for the link, i did refer to that as well as other UCF deferred posts, and most were due to the university mixing up papers!

i can only hope this is what happened to me!

This would be the moment for your GC to call the admissions office at UCF to determine what is going on, particularly if your hs tends to send a lot of students there. I’m thinking that there’s some sort of mistake of mix-up that should be remedied asap. If your GC is not able to intervene, are you close enough to be able to schedule an appointment and go over your file? Good luck!

Yes, i am in state! As i said before i emailed the admissions office, and i received an email back today. Here is the email:

To be deferred does not mean that you were not offered admission. Your file is currently at committee for a final decision. The application process is one that takes time, since we give consideration to each individual. I know you are probably anxious for decision and I appreciate your patience and understanding. Please realize that your academic credentials, ACT scores, SAT scores, and high school grade point average, are on the low side of our midranges, which in turn hurts your competitiveness for admission. As such, it may take a bit longer for you to receive an admission decision, but this delay in response does allow you optimal consideration. Also please understand that the admission process is a competitive one.

It may be helpful for you to review the midranges of our Fall 2009 Freshman Class as well. I have listed these midranges below for you to review, but it is important to note that ranges represent the middle 50% of our Fall 2009 Freshman Class. This means, that 25% of our Freshmen students for Fall 2009, fell above and below these ranges. It is always best to fall in between or around these ranges to be competitive. However, these ranges are not minimums.

Thank you so much for the help everyone. I would warn you though, do not treat UCF as a safety school any longer if your stats resemble mine. Their expectations have risen. My guidance counselors were all amazed that i was not a shoe in for acceptance. Just goes to show you never know what admission people are thinking

Your SAT is on the “low side” of mid ranges???

I can see that your ACT might be, but your GPA, too???

I think that you’ll eventually get accepted, but your file is being held until they see who else all applies this year.

BTW…since you weren’t excited about UCF in the first place as a safety, you need to come up with one or two more safeties. I know you applied to FSU, but you should have another safety since the same problem could happen at FSU (wouldn’t FSU have similar mid ranges or better?)

Maybe you should try to retake the ACT next month and take the SAT. Some kids do better on the SAT than the ACT. If it’s too late for Nov SAT, then see if Dec SAT will be accepted.

Will UCF and FSU accept Nov and Dec test scores???

they’ve been doing that a lot lately.
a few people from my school who are in the top 5% have been deferred due to their SAT scores being “less than average”.
it’s like they’re making you a number. :(

yeah i was surprised too! well there is a december act and i think that i am going to get a tutor and retake the test! i dont want the same thing to happen with my other schools!

yeah…this is particularly frustrating when the majority of my peers (some with lower stats than me) got accepted!!!

any ideas on some other safety schools??

ps. my advisor also told me my chances would have been much higher for an immediate acceptance if i had applied to summer school as well!! just in case anyone wants a definite in the UCF, thats the way to go!

Get yourself a real SAT practice book (the one from collegeboard). They can be bought online or at a bookstore.

Practice, practice, practice. Another hint…go thru the math sections and look for problems that are set up in a way that are unfamiliar to you; do those. Get yourself familiar with as many SAT style math questions as possible.

Read through the CR and W hints/advice at the beginning of the book. Pay attention to examples about idioms.

Does UCF use the writing for admission or just for Composition placement?

If you are a slow reader…notice if you’re “pronouncing words” in your head while you silently read. That slows readers down. Practice skimming/absorbing words as your read across a sentence without “pronouncing” them in your head. Use your finger to force your eyes across a sentence.

when taking a practice test…when you get to a question where you can narrow down your answer to 2 choices, guess which is best, BUT also mark on your answer key that that was a “guessed” answer.

That way, when you go thru with the answer key to see what you got wrong and why, you’ll also notice whether you got a guessed answer right or wrong. You can now determine why your guess was right, or why your guess was wrong. This will be a learning experience for you.

OP, have you taken any of the AP exams? did you do well on them? If so, I would send them to UCF in support of your application. Even though some schools claim they don’t consider AP scores, good scores certainly don’t hurt an applicant, especially one on the borderline.

Also, did you take the ACT only once? Go over your exam results(you can get your exam/answer key package from ACT) and analyze your specific weakenesses…then get practice books and work for just 30-60 minutes a day until the next test date.

well, today i just received my SAT scores and i got an 1120
580 critical reading
540 math
540 writing

So this is ok and will probably get me into UCF but i am still worried about fsu

thank you for the SAT tips, i will probably take it again now since those scores are disappointing!

i do not need to stay in state for money reasons or anything…i could play college volleyball and have received some offers, but i dont know if i want to play…

I don’t see how her new SAT scores are any better. They are equal to her ACT score. Whether UCF ultimately accepts her, it won’t be based on her new scores.

But, you’re right, her scores won’t likely get her into FSU
