Deferred from UIllinois Urbana-Champaign?

Hi everyone. As the title says, I was deferred. Although it isn't mine top choice, it is kind of disappointing because I thought it was my safety/low match. I have a GPA of 3.83 with all APs/Honors, SAT of 1950, and ACT of 30. I also have a lot of extracurriculars: 3 job experiences, 2 volunteer positions, 2 varsity sports, clubs, and National Honor Society. In my and my counselors/teachers' opinions, my essays were fantastic and original. My mom thinks I was deferred because I am out of state and UIllinois tend to take more instate people because it is a public school. My main is concern is that I won't be able to get into UMiami (first choice) if I can't even get into a safety/low match. I already got into Tulane, Rutgers, UPitt, and Michigan State. What do you think? Thanks.

I got deferred as well but my stats are slightly higher.

GPA: 3.63 (Unweighted) and 5.13 (Weighted. 6 grade points for A in Honors/AP and 5 gradepoints for A in a regular class)
Took the SAT 3 times.
Highest SAT in a single sitting: 2270 (710 CR, 800 M, 760 W)
Superscored SAT: 2310 (710 CR, 800 M, 800 W)
Here is my worst number: Class rank of 159/612.

Intended major was Chem Eng and 2nd choice was bioengineering.

Like the OP I thought that UIUC would have been an easy acceptance. I was really really disappointed when I got deferred since I am applying to many more selective universities such as GATech and CalTech.

Another reason why I think I got deferred is because I rushed my essays. I didn’t even bother going back and rereading them. I had 2 spelling/grammar mistakes in the extra info part of the application, and the 2 main essays were just snippets of my UT Austin essay. I was arrogant and thought that I would be able to get in.

EC’s include the usual honors student stuff (NHS, Math NHS/ Mu Alpha Theta, Science NHS, Model UN, Key Club) with one officer position (VP of Key Club).

Anyone else wanna shed some light on what happened here?

Same here. Decent essays SAT 2190 and UWGPA : 3.873/4 got deferred from the college of engineering

Same here. Deferred from Engineering.
31 ACT
Out of 10: Essays were a 6
EC’s were good.
GPA : 3.80 UW/3.96 W

Hopefully, in the College of Engineering, since most students know they want to do Engineering, and since UIUC is one of the top schools in the world for UIUC, not many students in regular decision will apply for COE. So, therefore, I believe most deferred students , like myself and YBN1996, will get in the second round.

Buritos4me yeah i agree with what you concluded, but on the bright side, i got into Purdue so the deferral kinda stepped aside. Hoping for regular admission to UIUC; wouldn’t say no to more options  Goodluck!

I was deferred too (engineering). gpa 3.7 ACT 32. Lots of dual-credit college courses. Out of state (OH). I like the analysis by an earlier posters in this thread … Most COE students would have applied in the EA cycle so we all may be accepted eventually:-)

I was admitted and here is my stats just to let you know:

SAT 2270 GPA(dunno, most likely ~3.7)

no fantastic ECs but great essays

I am admitted to engineering.

As there is no recommendation or subject test accepted for application, the essay, EC, GPA, and SAT1/ACT scores are the only criteria for consideration. If you blow at any of these, your chance would be low.

I was accepted in state. But I talked to my college counselor and she said that for some reason, Illinois decided to defer more people than usual this year because they want to give everyone who’s applying both EA and RD a chance at getting their first choice major. So for all of you I would say that you’ll definitely be accepted to the school later, but its still up in the air whether you’d get into your intended major. My gpa is pretty low, but I applied to the School of General Studies so I was accepted.

For some reason a lot of colleges are deferring more people. I heard that Northeastern deferred pretty much almost everyone. My school is very competitive and is highly ranked, but everyone got deferred from Northeastern, including myself.

I was deferred from Chemical Engineering. I go to a top 3 public school in Illinois. My stats are:

GPA: 3.53/4.0UW (Very Strong Upward Trend)
ACT:
Composite: 33
Math: 33
Science: 35
English:34
Reading: 33

EC’s were pretty average maybe slightly below average. Played for hockey team for 4 years, have a successful youtube channel, done about 100 hours of volunteer work.

Hooks: URM (Hispanic), Instate, upward trend, discussed parental divorce for low freshman gpa
Essays: Average to above average

I have been hearing mixed information about what being deferred from UIUC means this year. Has anybody talked with admissions if they are taking a different approach towards deferring kids this year? Has it been the same in years past? Honestly, I just want to get in to the school at all. DGS (or my first choice) would be welcome for me! Hopefully we all hear good news two months from now!

Admitted but deferred at my 1st choice UofM. 3.9, 8% class rank, 28 ACT, 3 varsity sports, AP’s, GPA >3.85 entire HS career, lots of service.
Bummed about UM but got in at Purdue, Butler, UICU, MSU, IU. Will not make a decision until I hear from UM.

Everyone saying that UIUC Engineering school is their safety school is ridiculous. Getting into engineering at Illinois is like getting into a lower Ivy League. Tehdude1 you will most likely be considered for another major in a lower school.

PatPavs… Lower then a 3.3?

IllinoisWisco is right UIUC Engineering is ranked 5th overall and 7 disciplines are ranked in the top 10 including, civil #1, computer #4, electrical #3. All rankings better then the Ivys
