I found out Monday morning that I was deferred from USF (University of South Florida). To be honest, I was not really expecting to be deferred and I am very frustrated at this point as to what I should do/what are my chances of eventually getting accepted.

My grades:
GPA: 3.74 uw, 3.94 w
NHS member
over 400 community service hours
Honor Roll student for three years
I work 4 days a week
many honors classes, two Dual Enrollment courses (both of which I had B's), and one AP

SAT:
570 CR
540 M
540 W

ACT: 23 composite

My senior first semester grades are all B's, so they aren't bad but they're not exceptional either. Will this drastically affect my chances of getting in seeing as my GPA right now is pretty good? I am retaking my SAT and ACT to try and really get my scores up. I am sending two recommendation letters (one from an alumni), and a personal letter from myself. Am I in the ballpark for acceptance?

That’s very surprising. You seem more than qualified for USF.

I would apply to fiu/ucf which are both rolling admission.
My friend got into fiu with a 1300 on the new SAT so you should have no problem getting in. Even if it is not your top choice, it is always good to have a backup school!

I wish you the best of luck and hope you end up going the university you want to!

You appear qualified, but that’s debatable because your SAT and ACT scores are fairly low for your GPA… It appears that your school has some serious inflation or something of the like.

Some important factors: Are you in-state? Did you apply for Summer or Fall?

I know nothing about that Univ, but was thinking the same as SeekingUni about the SAT. One of my sons matched you in W and M and he had a 3.0! With a gpa that high I’d be wondering why your SAT’s weren’t better. My kid didn’t even prepare AT ALL for them. I’d say that’s why you were deferred. Do they want updated transcripts before they decide?

If your school has a reputation for High GPA’s without high SAT’s the college might know that and they might “discount” your gpa. No idea if that is the case, or if it happens but I would think it could.

Hm, in-state and applying for Summer is what I was afraid to hear. Summer is for their lower-caliber students, so knowing that you applied for summer yet were still deferred, I think it’s almost a safe bet to say that the disparity in your GPA and test scores is the problem. You definitely need to get those up to par with your GPA… and by that I mean break 600 (close to 650) and at least around a 27 on the ACT.

I also sent a personal letter and two recommendation letters telling them that USF is my first choice, and my semester grades stand as this: 3.67 uw, 4.0 w. I got B’s in both of my dual enrollment classes last semester, too. Still think I’ve got a shot?
