what hurt me: GPA, and *senior year grades didn't help the cause

I got deferred too. Anyone know what percentage of applicants get deferred?

this is particularly hard to take when you have worked hard and earned terrific stats and ECs. if this is your first academic setback, it’s even harder. it’s not all your fault; don’t beat yourself up for your “lousy” grades when you’re taking hard courses. part of the fault lies with the school having to do what it sees as what’s best for itself. that is, it’s not entirely personal, it’s not all about you, although it feels that way.

if you’ve done everything you can and you don’t make the first cut, you make sure you have some other schools that you will get or have gotten into and can afford. then you call up the wash adcom and thank them for deferring you. re-express your desire to go to washu and why in detail (do some homework on this)–assuming you feel strongly about washu. (you might discover after some more research that you don’t really feel that strongly.) then you wait two weeks and call her or him again. if you can promise you’ll go there if you get in, then send him or her a letter to that effect. good luck.

@jkeil911 thanks so much for the advice…i’m feeling somewhat better now haha. by adcom do you mean just the admissions office in general?

no, at this point you want to be in contact with the admissions officer for your high school. he or she is expected to know your app best. expressing interest in person is really important at this point. you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
