Hey everyone, I know that I've posted this before, but I brought up my SAT's by 40 points and got all A's on my midyear report, so I decided to post again. Thanks for coming. ^_^

skipped junior year; will graduate from an extremely!!!! competitive HS with an advanced diploma in 3 years

Wrote an excellent essay and optional submission and will get killer reccomendations from my journalism advisor, the sponsor of the Spanish Club, and my AP English senior year/Journalism Skills in freshman year teacher. The English/Journalism Skills teacher is on the WM alumni board, and after I was deferred promised to write a follow-up letter.

Also, since I skipped a year there was no way I could have taken Calculus. This is the only school where I want to go...please let me know. Thanks so much!!

i think the deadline has already passed. UVA is also a little too big for me, and i have friends who go there and they say the party scene is really big. i mean, i like parties, but not ALL THE TIME

If anything kills you, its gonna be that you didn't take more honors classes. They could look at your grades and wonder why you weren't in honors to begin with. It can kinda make you look like an underachiever. From what I hear, course difficulty is pretty much the number one factor they consider.

I go to James River, and I got deferred ED too. We actually have pretty similar stats, though my rank is a few spots higher and my SAT was a 2170.

I'm guessing, and this is just a guess, that you probably go to Godwin. Thats the only school I know of in the area that compares with JR. Doesn't it suck going to a school where a 4.2 something puts you above #50 in the class? I'm in the same boat. Good luck!

Yeah, I go to Godwin. It's crazy how competitive it is...one of my friends has a 4.2 and he said that he's ranked about 120. Crazy. I wish I had taken more honors/AP's...I wanted to by my mom wouldn't let me (don't ask) but I'm hoping that skipping a year might help things. Atdiemokid...good luck to you too!!! Let's hope that we both get good news in April! ^_^

Rainbowwings444: I think your stats are just fine for W & M! However, the fact that you skipped a grade might hinder your chances for admission (age & maturity factor). Also, I don't see much passion (unless I missed something) when I reviewed your stats. What did you write your essays on?

To answer the questions, there are 488 kids in the senior class at Godwin. As for the passion, I really pushed how much I love writing (I write for 2 newspapers and did one of my essays on that) and I also tried to show my dedication to the Spanish language and the Spanish Club. I wrote my other essay on how I earned my Girl Scout Silver Award (I set up a self-defense class for girls). Lastly, I skipped a year because 1)I felt that I was ready for college 2)I knew that I made my mom unhappy sometimes, and that she hated living in Virginia. If I went to college earlier, she would be able to move to Florida sooner. However, she decided to divorce my dad, so I didn't really need to skip a year because she's in Florida now anway. Oh well, I don't think it'll hurt that much, I talked to a WM admissions officer and he said that it would be seen as challenging myself.

I think your stats are great and definitely suitable for W & M. Personally, I think you deserve to get in. However, because your highest math is only trig (I think, I just peeped at your stats) and you haven't taken a lot of AP and/or honors courses (i.e. taken the most challenging courses available) and you are applying with other applicants with the same stats but who have also taken almost all honors and/or AP courses. Other than that -- do you have any qualities or interests that make you unique to help set you apart from the other applicants? Where else did you apply?

worldshopper: thanks for your responses! as far as setting myself apart, i've really tried to show them my passion for writing, as well as my ambition with skipping a grade. i also tried to demonstrate my leadership through my girl scouting things and through the leadership positions i hold. to answer your other question, i've been accepted into the honors program at florida gulf coast university, and i'm applying to the university of richmond.

you're GPA is high, your SAT is a little low. but you are a solid applicant and I cannot believe that you got deferred. There's another post, similar to this, only that person had higher SAT scores and all, and that person got deferred too! WM must have a REALLY competitive pool this year!!
If it helps, my bro got in with 1370 SAT(1200 first try)
3.7~8 GPA, common ECs(varsity sports, some awards, some leadership)
okay essays, and okay recommendations...
I think you have a good shot, and good luck.

I think her SAT score is FINE for W & M in-state -- not low at all. I don't think that is why she got deferred. I believe it has to do with skipping a year in addition to not have taken the most challenging course load. She is applying against other kids from her school who have taken more challenging courses with perhaps same range of SAT scores and GPA.

I have also applied to W & M and have my own uphill battle to climb -- I actually have SAT scores 20 points lower than OP!

I wish the OP the best of luck with W & M because I can tell she really wants to go there and of course I hope she gets in!

Thanks everyone! ^_^ Worldshopper, I hope that you get in as well! You're right about skipping a year being one of the reasons that I was deferred; an admissions officer said that they wanted to see more grades since I was only able to send them 4 semesters instead of the usual 6. Good luck-let's hope we both get good news in April!

Rainbowwings: Thanks and maybe they just want to see your senior mid-term grades before making a decision since you skipped a grade. You never know. At least you already have one school bagged!
