Deferred..hopes arent high, but-

my app was complete 11/2 and was deferred 12/2... a real quick decision. is that bad?
im OOS 3.5 michigan uw gpa( i knoww dont tell me it sucks ) 4.048... reg. weighted.
top 10% of class
6 APs
very strong ECs
excellent alumni recommendations along w teacher and guidance.
30 ACT
1280 SAT <--yeah not so great, again.

i cant say i was expecting an admit. and im already planning on going to wisconsin or maryland assuming i dont get a lovely surprise by mid april. but i was just wondering- an estimate, anyone have an idea of where i would stand, like "high admit," "admit with reservations".. etc. should i keep my hopes this low? also do you think it was my gpa that did me in? thanks for your help =]

hi kathryne :)

katherine* sorry youre probably excited that you got replies with feedback and its just me being an obsessive loser. levanta el techo.

yeah, it was the gpa that got you. but, i think you have really good chances of ultimately getting in, as long as you pull good grades this semester.

I think you are going to eventually get in. Your GPA is a bit low however, if it was 3.6-3.8, i'd say you'd be waiting on an admittance letter. 3 out of 4 applicants from my school (the one that sends the most students to UM) get deferred. Only the top students, or the one's here on CC who are applying here as a safety, are the one's getting in right now. Of the deferred applicants, about half are taken. And with a solid test score and 3.5 GPA, your chances are pretty decent. But you are OOS, and that won't help against your OOS competition.

I think it's a SLIGHT reach. I think you're getting in, but it's about average. Like 65%.

thanks.. anyone else please?

Don't worry about your SAT if your ACT is higher. Admissions gives you credit for the test you did best on and doesn't hold a lower score on the other test against you.

As for your chances, can't say.

Did it explicitly say that you were deferred? because I got a letter requesting my semester grades before they could reach any sort of decison i.e. defer, accept, reject. and it never said deferred at all.

"Thank you for your application to the College of Literature Science and the Arts...Your application has received an individualized and comprehensive evaluation and has been deferred for a final decision until a later date." Then it goes on to say that I could receive a final decision anywhere between now and mid april.

what now? what other the admit rates of deffered students and what's the difference between the two letters?

I can't comment on the difference rates of the two letters, but i've been told numerous times that the deferred rate is about 50%.

50% is pretty sweet. so if you are deffered youre chances arent that much lower. what happend to others that apply early? has anyone been outright rejected so far? it seems like people have only been admitted or gotten one of the two letters which both seem ok.

I'm afraid it isn't helpful to go off prior years' history with deferred eventually being accepted. Things are really in flux at Michigan.

I know it's got to be beyond frustrating to feel in the dark, but anyone who tells you what your odds are based on Fall 2004 or Fall 2005 is probably not giving you useful information!

That's true with the Mosher Jordan closing, this years applicant pool will have less spots.

faaantastic. madison here i come

It cuts both ways. On the one hand, because the class will be a little smaller, they won't admit as many. Maybe that will mean that fewer students who get deferred will hear an eventual "yes."

On the other hand, Michigan is being extremely careful about admits because of the need to NOT go over. Because of this caution, they may be deferring more people, sooner, than they have previously. And towards the end of the cycle, when they've got a better handle on the class, they might very well end up taking some of them, possibly even more than usual.

This is why I say you can't predict what will happen with defers. I don't just mean that the picture is more pessimistic. It might be more optimistic. Your crystal ball is as good as mine. Who knows? Take all advice and predictions with a grain of salt.

Myccname, some people have been rejected, yes.

i guess the people who were rejected arent posting here... thanks for the help hoedown

Well, there are very few people who have actually been rejected.
