Deferred last week and accepted today?

We're confused but think we should be happy. First trimester grades went in during the interim. Is it possible they did the review this quickly? Has this happened to anyone else?

darn you are on lucky duck P:

You should probably call the admissions office about it. My friend had the same thing happen last week, but it was because they had mixed up her file with someone who had the same name as hers. She got a deferral one day and an acceptance the next, and the other girl didn’t get either. I don’t think they would have changed their mind that quickly, but you never know?

This happened to me, not because they screwed up my name, but because they typically have additional room for early admission left over after they go through all the applications once. It’s also possible that Ted Spencer personally overrides deferrals.
I got a deferral and an acceptance within 6 days sometime before Christmas.

It basically means that you were on the edge between being accepted early and those who are deferred. They explained when I called that “[they] accept those people who apply to crazy colleges like Harvard and MIT first and that * just happened to be after them.” Funny enough, UMich was my not-preferred safety school, (in-state) I had just gotten deferred from MIT when I made this call.

Well, we hope it’s not a fluke and that mehmonster is right. Joceykin – did your friends emails have the same student id? Ours did. Also, what was the result – deferred or accepted?

I’m not sure about the IDs on my friend’s e-mails…she was accepted though. But now I’m thinking that if your e-mails had the same ID mehmonster is probably right. I’d still call though. Good luck! :)

Thanks – the agony is that they’re out until January.

This happened to my son too. Received a deferral email Thursday 12/16 and an acceptance email Tuesday 12/21. Got the acceptance package by snail mail yesterday. We were very surprised, to say the least!

I have seen this happen before, deferral one week, acceptance the next. Mixing up files is very rare.

Stmaria – that’s great – congrats – did you or your son call admissions to inquire? I’d hate to call and say are you sure you didn’t make a mistake? Don’t really want an answer to that if they did.

Check WA to see what it says for your decision

WA does not have a decision. We heard it takes a few days.

Just curious, which deferral letter did you receive and what school did you apply to? Stats would be great too.

@another mom: No, we didn’t call admissions. You’re right, we didn’t want to hear that they’d made a mistake! When he checked Wolverine Access shortly after he received the email, the view decision button also said he was accepted. Then getting the “big envelope” in the mail yesterday pretty much confirmed it. He was accepted to the College of Engineering!

The deferral letter was:
Thank you for your freshman application to the University of Michigan. After an initial individualized and comprehensive review of your application, we have determined that we will need additional information in order to make a final decision. We will not re-evaluate your application file until after our regular decision deadline of February 1, 2011. We need this additional information and time to ensure that we give your application the best possible review. We will notify you of a final decision on your application by mid-April.

The quality of grades earned in academic courses is one of several critical factors taken into consideration in evaluating a student’s competitive admissibility. To give your application a final evaluation, we will need your fall semester or first trimester grades. Because it is important that we receive these grades as soon as possible, please request to have a PDF of your grades sent from the issuing institution to our office via an e-transcript vendor or to ecredentials@umich.edu, if possible. If your counselor sent the initial Secondary School Record for your application through The Common Application online portal, they will need to complete the 2010-2011 MidYear Report using the same method. Otherwise, please ask your high school counselor to fax a report of these grades to our office at 734.936.0740.

She would not like it if I posted stats.
First trimester grades were her best, however.
Good luck.
