Deferred Letter (add accept/reject)

I know people want to see the letters ahead of time, so here's the one for deferred.

Dear Ms. twistycsc:

The Yale Admissions Committee has completed its evaluation of this year’s Single Choice Early Action candidates and has voted to defer action on your application. We will review your file again in the spring, and I will inform you of the outcome in April.

I realize that this decision may come as a disappointment to you, especially given the strong interest in Yale that you conveyed to us by applying early. We are fully aware of your strengths as a student and potential contributor to life at Yale, but we would like to render a final decision after reviewing those strengths in the context of the larger Regular Action pool. This action is not a mark of weakness in your application, but a testament only to the extraordinary level of talent and accomplishment among the four thousand students who applied early to Yale this year.

The difficult news is that you face an additional period of uncertainty about our decision. It is also challenging for us to give you a meaningful estimate of your chances for admission in April. The rate of admission for the entire applicant pool last year was just under 10%. The rate for students who were deferred in Early Action, as you have been, but who were eventually admitted during the Regular Action cycle was about 13%. The level of competition is high, but we do accept a number of applicants who apply early and are deferred for additional consideration.

If we require information in addition to the Midyear Report, the admissions officer in charge of your area will write or call. In turn, please keep us informed of any important new information you would like us to consider. We know that you will be an outstanding candidate for admission at many universities, and we look forward to another opportunity to consider your application to Yale.

Best wishes,

Jeffrey Brenzel
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

lol that's mine...except i wont be able to send a midyear report cuz ive already finished school!

I got deferred as well.

deferred as well :(

Dear Mr. rhs06:

Congratulations on your admission to Yale College, Class of 2010! It gives me great pleasure to send you this letter, and you have every reason to feel proud of the work and aspirations that led you to this moment.

On the folder that holds your admissions materials, you will find the words of the late George Pierson, a professor and official historian of the University: “Yale is at once a tradition, a company of scholars, and a society of friends.” In evaluating candidates for admission to Yale College, the Admissions Committee seeks to identify students whose academic achievements, diverse talents, and strength of character will make them feel at home in this remarkable community. We look forward to your becoming a vital contributor to the university's life and mission.

You may reply to our offer of admission at any time in the coming months. While the final Candidate’s Reply Date is May 1, we would love to hear from you before then. You may return your reply card to us at any time. On April 18 and 19 most of your future classmates will come to the campus for Bulldog Days, our program for admitted students, and we hope that you will join them! To register for Bulldog Days and also to connect with other admitted students, please visit our new website at www.admits.yale.edu.

Finally, if you have any general or specific questions about Yale, feel free to e-mail us at bulldog@yale.edu. I am delighted, both for you and for the College, at the prospect that you will join us next fall. Welcome to Yale!

Best wishes,

Jeffrey Brenzel
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

Deferred. Deferred. Deferred.

deferred .

deferred, dejected, and distraught

Alas, the long-awaited rejection letter. Overall, I think that it's pretty well done. The only part I don't like is the part about my weaknesses; I really don't want to be hearing that type of stuff right now.

Dear "my name":

The Yale Admissions Committee has completed its evaluation of Single Choice Early Action candidates, and I write with sincere regret to say that we are not able to offer you a place in the Class of 2010. I realize that this decision may come as a real disappointment, especially given the strong interest you conveyed to us by applying early.

I hope that you will understand the decision as a reflection of the extraordinary talent represented in our applicant pool, rather than as a judgment about your own abilities. Of the twenty thousand individuals who will apply to Yale this year, most are fully capable of successful work here, of benefiting from what Yale College has to offer, and of making a unique contribution to the Yale community. It is painful to us that we must turn away so many superbly talented students.

You may be tempted to ask what was lacking in your application. In truth, it is usually difficult for us to point to obvious weaknesses, when so many applicants have demonstrated real achievement and potential. Our decisions say far more about the small number of spaces available and the difficult choices we make than they do about a candidate's personal and academic promise.

Our early action program was instituted partly to give our applicants a firm decision on their candidacy in mid-December, when there is still time to file other applications. I am sorry that we were not able to respond positively to your interest in Yale but want to wish you every success in your educational pursuits. Experience suggests that regardless of our decisions, most of our early action candidates will be welcomed by outstanding colleges during the Regular Decision process. I extend my best wishes for the coming year.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Brenzel
Dean of Undergraduate Admissions

Don't forget that in addition to the letter, if you get accepted you'll see a blue screen with a bulldog that says Welcome to Yale class of 2010 (The bulldog is the 'A' in Yale, lol). Plus there's singing. Its quite an experience.

haha

I didn't notice that the bulldog was the "A." I guess my eyes were too blurred from..oh never mind.

You can go back and replay it if you want. It's the 'welcome' link at the top of the page containing the decision letter. Hopefully this time your eyes won't be blurry from... I mean what? :)

Congratulations you two! I hope the bulldog shall sing for me in April ;)

Thanks!!! I hope so too...

i hope the bulldog prostrates itself before me...well...that may be asking for a bit too much.

Lol! Interesting wrath, do let me know if that happens. And maybe it can start crying before you and apologizing for not accepting you EA :p. Wow, I would like that :)
