I got my deferral letter yesterday. I applied to M&T ED but chose wharton for RD. At first, I had no idea what to feel. I was bummed to not get accepted but at the same time kinda felt fortunate to even just get deferred from such a selective program, considering I'm hookless with mediocre test scores. plus I'm asian, from california.

Just a few things about me. 4.0/4.71 uw/w GPA. 2060 SAT, 33 ACT. 800's on Physics and Math II. I've taken 7 AP tests with all 5's except two 4's and a 2 (I know :( )

My main EC's:
-Varsity tennis 4 years
-I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do
-A friend and I organized a free summer tennis camp for kids in our community. Huge success
-Volunteer for two environmental organizations (member of the Board of Directors for one of these). I've worked for them all 4 years
-Violin (Part of a youth symphony for 4 years)
-I've started my own online retail company (an LLC). I have partnered with suppliers internationally as well. I wrote a lot about entrepreneurship in my essays
-FIRST Robotics (team 1717, dos pueblos engineering academy) 4 years
- I've won the California Capital Markets Contest, and placed second in the State Econ Challenge
-I'm apart of Student Government (Commissioner of Environmental Concerns, I know it's kinda odd)

My recs I feel very confident about. One from the econ teacher who was involved in the econ competitions, and the other from my physics/engineering/robotics teacher.

Wow, I just realized this rant turned into a chance thread. Sorry guys. But do you think I'll have a chance RD as a deferee to Wharton, if not M&T? I know my test scores are average and probably below average compared to other M&T applicants, but I just feel like my entire app says engineering + business.

Is there anything I could do to improve my chances? I have a letter of rec from the executive director of one of the community service organizations that I could send in.

I'm still having mixed feelings about my deferral. Thanks for letting vent my thoughts.

If there are any other deferrees who want to share, feel free. Tips for us are welcome.

Keep up the good academic and extracurricular work! It will pay off no matter where you go. Perhaps sending an email to your Regional Admissions Director might be helpful in a month, especially to reconfirm your interest in M&T.

Earn great semester grades (well if you aren’t already done) and write a letter to your regional admissions director expressing your most salient desire to help them with their decision. Ask what could be done and BE POLITE!

What if my semester ends after January 1st? I guess there’ll be enough time between mid Jan. and decision time to send it in . . . I really just wanna chill for the rest of the year and focus on robotics. Stupid deferral.

Any other suggestions/feedback for my “chance,” or just deferrees in general would be appreciated

I also got deferred it sucks, I feel like I’m being given false hope. I feel like everything I’ve done for the last 3 years of my life ahs been somewhat of a waste. Not to sound like a total jerk but I doubt I would’ve done over 500 hours of communitty service just to get deferred, nor would I have spent time energy and effort trying to achieve the grades and scores I thought I needed. I’m not saying I’m the most well qualified applicant in the world, in fact Petree your stats are a little better then mine, not by much though haha, but I feel like I was above average for Penn.

Why ED only to M&T? They only accept about 50 for M&T, I think that is much more competitive than Wharton. You can’t ED anywhere else anyway why not taking a shot at Wharton ED also while you are at it?

I understand but now he is asking whether he can get into Wharton. If there is other particular program that is being targeted over Wharton, then I guess it makes sense.

M&T is first and foremost under SEAS. My son did opt for ED Wharton, but now apparently is on track for RD M&T. That is somewhat troubling [as we had been told that once someone opts for ED of the single choice, that is the only place where they will be considered RD].

Admissions told me today that they wouldn’t have kept someone on track for RD M&T unless they were a very strong candidate for M&T. That is certainly a nice complement and very nice to hear, but that doesn’t seem consistent with the preferences my son selected on his application supplement. He wouldn’t have taken such a large chance [to lose out on attending Wharton] for M&T had he known that.
