Just wondering what happens when you are deferred. Do the applications of those who are deferred go into a separate pool and evaluated as such? Or are they put back with those in the regular decision review and judged that way? Also does anyone know the percentage of those who are accepted during the regular decision review that were deferred early? Thanks in advance and congrats to everyone who was accepted early!
From what I understand they take another look at your application during RD. I hope your first semester grades are great and your GC sends them in. I’m not positive, but if you page back through Dean J’s blog last spring she may have published some stats last year about how many deferred EA students ultimately receive an offer.
I’m sure you’re still in shock. Make sure you have another school you’d be happy to attend and make UVA aware that you still want to be considered for admission. I’ve seen so many students deferred from another leading VA school that are eventually admitted that I think it must be pretty common. I don’t know though. Good luck.
Advice to all deferrees reading: First of, make sure you’re midterm report is as good as possible. I think a major reason people are deferred is because they might have an upwards trend throughout HS and adcoms want to see if they can still maintain that trend senior year instead of slacking off, so they’re just being cautious by deferring people and seeing where they stand. With notifications this late, a good thing is that the adcoms know which applicants took 1st sem. senior year seriously and which didn’t since most midterm reports come out end of Jan - mid Feb, where little can be done to drastically improve midterm grades. This is why people should always take 1st Semester SERIOUSLY. You don’t know if you’ll get accepted until you do.
Anyway, your application is just moved from EA to the RD pool so the actual application is just placed in the pool of RD applications. You’ll be reviewed once again by the same staff for the next two or so months. I don’t specifically know the acceptance rate for deferrees but I can imagine its not something arbitrarily low since UVA does have a big student body to take more deferred students than most other colleges so don’t worry too much.
If you go to the deferred FAQ on the schools site, and scroll all the way down, it provides data for deferred acceptance rates by school and residency for last year
The statistics for this year will be released in a few days.
Deferred applicants will be reviewed in the RD round TOGETHER with RD applicants, yet interest in the school indicated through the EA application will definitely be noted.
Also, have a strong Mid-Year Report (Winter term for trimester system. Idk for others). Good luck! You still have a chance!
Don’t give up. My son was deferred and later accepted during regular decisions. He is now a very happy second year student who is about to turn in his McIntire application. Just keep working hard! Good luck.
@tranquility145 UVA doesn’t factor interest, and applying non-binding early isn’t even a demonstration of interest, it just shows you had your stuff together early.
I was deferred and then later accepted back when it was ED not EA.
I have written a number of posts on what I did, here is a google search for them:

Thank you all for the help! I guess I was a little disappointed about not getting in early. From what it seems though, there’s hope for regular decision and I know that my mid-year grades will be incredibly good.
I’m sorry you were deferred. Good luck in the RD round.
It’s important that you focus on some other schools as well. UVA’s numbers aren’t that great in terms of chances of getting admitted to the point that you should be counting on admission. Do what you have to do to stay in the RD round, but do move on . Make sure you have a school that you can afford that you know will take you on the list too
