I was deferred today from my top choice school, UofM. I'm instate and hope to be a doctor so I'm not really sure where I should go from here. My stats quickly are:
Asian-Indian born in US
Michigan Resident
3.4-3.5ish unweighted GPA
3.7-3.8ish weighted GPA
One of the top Michigan Public School Districts
Lots of Honors/APs
Great EC's/Leadership
ACT:30
SAT:1340
I've been accepted to Michigan State University (shudders...) and Wayne State University. I'm applying to Kalamazoo College in the next week and I think I have a pretty good shot there. So which school should I go to? Are there any other schools I should apply to? Thanks

Whoa....you're instate too...

I think it might be your GPA...

Whend id you apply?

Wow, I'm surprised you got waitlisted...you just made me very nervous, I just got rejected from Northwestern early and UMich is my 2nd choice.

spyder, when did you apply?

Any of your three choices would be perfectly fine for admittance to med school. As a matter of fact, I know students who were admitted to Umich who chose either Wayne State (usually because they got a full ride), Michigan State or Kalamazoo because they felt it was easier to get accepted to Umich Medical School from somewhere but Umich. I don't know if that's true, but it's certainly a belief around here. Your other option if you really, really want to go to Umich, would be to start at one of the other ones and transfer. I also know kids who have done that.

i got a 1230- 680 math/550 verbal. 3.4 umich gpa. lots of ecs. honors and aps. new jersey. wen do u think ill hear and do u think ill get rejected?

crusty, your gpa is lower than usual for admittance to UMich, you may have a slimmer chance than some people. Are you a legacy or URM? That would help your chances. Either way, you will hear from them eventually. I would have a couple of other apps out there just in case as a fall-back. Good luck!

thnx cruella no i am not a legacy and not a URM but my courseload and ECs r very good i believe

Natty, he did not get waitlisted.

Deferred doesn't mean he'll never get in, it just means they're not ready to make a decision on him yet. They send the defer letter as a courtesy so students aren't wondering if the application is lost or incomplete or sitting on some desk somewhere.

As has been noted in other threads, U-M appears to be doing admissions pretty cautiously this year. They need to know more about the overall applicant pool before making some decisions.

Hoedown- Wow, I must've missed that the first time I read the letter I got. I re-read it and you're right. It says:
"Your application has received an individualized and comprehensive evaluation and has been deferred for a final decision until a later date. Your application will be re-evaluated on a regular basis, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year's freshman applicant pool. We expect to reeive more than 22,000 applications from first-year applicants for a class of about 5,200. This requires us to usea very selective process to manage our enrollment. All admissions decisions will be made no later than mid-April, 2005."

So basically they're saying my application is borderline and they want to see who else applies before accepting, waitlisting, or rejecting me. How good of a chance do you think I have of making it? If I wrote to them would it help?

Also, does anyone else (hoedown, alexandre) know if it is more common to be accepted or waitlisted after being deferred? Thanks.

It is not easier to get into UM med school from other instate universities-Michigan does take a large amount of undergrads from UM because it is public. Also, getting in after a waitlist/deferral is a crapshoot.

Getting a deferral letter doesn't really give you any more information about your chances. You can't even really go off prior year's decisions because last year was a completely new process, and this year they are being conservative in the early stages.

Some students who get deferral letters won't ever get admitted, and some will. Wish I could give you more to go on!
